Windows 10: New windows update breaks my microphone

Around yesterday this problem began to occur where my laptop would recognize 2 audio inputs, the built in microphone array attached with the webcam, and my external microphone attached to my headset. However, it would only detect audio from the internal microphone on any website or desktop application I used. I ran the trouble shooting and it kept on giving an error that the audio services were not responding. I took it upon myself to go through any and all threads I could find over the course of the past two days to solve this issue. Repeatedly updated the drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled them, used a restore point to before the issue fixed, which only temporarily solved the issue, and ultimately had Windows 10 completely re-installed this evening and still this issue persists. I can verify the microphone on the headset, or any audio input device I have tried does work, as on my phone it detects audio without a problem. I doubt that the issue is my audio jack, as audio is still sent through the headphones and the notification pops up asking what device I just plugged in. If there is absolutely anything that I missed, or any more information that would be helpful to diagnose the problem I will be more than happy to post it, below is any more relevant information about my computer system that might be helpful

Built in microphone not working

I understand your concern and will assist you to resolve this issue.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps

Method 1: I suggest you to set microphone as default device and check.

• 
  Right click on the volume icon in the system tray and then click "Recording devices"
  
• 
  Right click on the blank space in the popped up window and then select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices".
  
• 
  Right click on Microphone and then click "Enable".
  
• 
  Highlight the microphone and then choose "Set as Default Device".
  
• 
  Click Apply and OK.
  

Step 2: Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.

• 
  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled. Follow the steps given to check that:
  
• 
  Right click on the volume icon and select “Recording devices”.
  
• 
  Now, Right Click on an empty space and select, “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disabled devices”.
  
• 
  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.
  

And also update the audio drivers from the manufacturer web site and install.

Microphone issues

Here are the possible reasons why you're getting an error "The microphone did not pick anything up" when using it:

• Incorrect settings (microphone is not set as default device)
  
• Corrupted or outdated driver
  
• Faulty device
  

For us to isolate the issue, we'd like to know the following:

• Were there any changes made to your computer prior to this issue(e.g. Windows updates)?
  
• Have you tried connecting other microphone to your computer?
  
• Have you tried connecting the microphone to the other computer?
  

In the meantime, we suggest running the Recording Audio Troubleshooter to find and repair problems with recording sound. We also suggest checking if your microphone is set as your default recording device. For troubleshooting steps, please see

Windows 10 Pro and Ergnomic Break Reminder

Apologies for the late reply.



Do you remember installing any break reminder software?



It looks like it is a pop up from a break reminder software.



I suggest you to look for this in Programs in features and uninstall it if do not use it.



Try the following steps:

• 
  Press Windows + R keys to open Run Command
  
• 
  Type Appwiz.cpl and hit enter
  
• 
  Search for the programs and un-install it.
