Windows 10: New Year, new experiences rolling out for Yammer

Happy 2021! The Yammer team has been busy over the past several weeks and we wanted to take a moment to share some updates on previously announced features and experiences that are in the process of rolling out.

Share to Yammer from SharePoint

Soon, youâll be able to send SharePoint pages directly to Yammer communities. This new capability makes it easy to start Yammer posts, questions, polls, and praises right from SharePoint pages. The new Send to dialog box includes the full fidelity Yammer publishing experiences with the ability to style questions, praise, and polls as well as add rich text and images.

New Yammer Embed

Bring the new Yammer styling and functionality to any webpage using the new Embed. If you are using the classic embed experience, no action is needed. Learn more.

New Yammer tab for Microsoft Teams

Get the modern styling and features of the new Yammer in your Yammer tab within Microsoft Teams. Rolling out now!

Immersive Virtual Event Styling

New Yammer virtual event improvements are here to optimize your viewing experience! These changes include:

a side-by-side viewer so that you can engage in the conversation while keeping the video player front and center.

the ability to collapse pinned conversations to focus on new conversations

a new feed that showcases conversation threads

Hashtags and Topics

We shared the future of hashtags and topics in this blog. Now, the visual updates have been made to topics and clicking a hashtag now opens a page of community search results on that tag. Another change, that allows users to post a hashtag without automatically adding a topic is now underway and should be widely available by mid-January. Other changes noted in the blog are coming soon.

Continuing Improvements

Weâve also tightened up whitespace and padding, and brought additional administrative features and navigation to the mobile experiences. In the coming weeks and months, weâll be rolling out additional insights for conversations and events, tightening the integration between Yammer, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint, and shipping new features relating to knowledge, corporate communications and moreâ so keep an eye on our blog and Twitter!

The new Yammer is generally available worldwide

Yammer connects and engages employees across the organization. Last November, we announced an entirely new Yammer experience, delivering new capabilities and integrations that power leadership engagement, corporate communications, and knowledge sharing across Microsoft 365. Today, we’re thrilled to announce that the new Yammer is now generally available for all customers. We’re also excited to unveil several additional features to help your organizations get more out of Yammer and collaborate across companies.

What's new

Here are some of the capabilities in the new Yammer that make communities and conversations more impactful:

Build communities with Microsoft 365

Groups have been renamed communities

Pin your favorite communities for quick access

Use the updated suite bar to stay on top of notifications and search just as you would in other Microsoft 365 applications

Manage the content in communities with more control

Set the default publisher type to be a question

Report conversations

Close conversations that have come to a conclusion

Change a conversation to a question - Community managers will soon be able to convert a regular conversation into a question, if the person creating the post didn’t use the Question type when creating it. This can be helpful to draw attention to unanswered questions and also to enable additional functionality like “Mark best answer”.

Yammer mobile superpowers
Modern organizations require mobile solutions that help connect employees and move work forward – wherever that work is happening. The new Yammer is available on iOS and Android, with some added improvements, including:

Dark Mode is now available for Yammer mobile. Whether you prefer light or dark, now you can pick your favorite theme on either iOS or Android.

New mobile video sharing that helps you instantly capture, edit, apply filters, and publish compelling videos up to 3 minutes long right from mobile.

Microsoft Teams

The new Communities app for Teams for the desktop and Teams Mobile are now generally available, helping everyone, including Firstline Workers and deskless employees stay connected, receive important updates and alerts, attend live events, and share feedback and ideas across teams and locations.

Interactive conversations in Outlook

You can now engage with Yammer conversations directly from your Outlook inbox. See the full Yammer conversation, like, and reply directly from the email notification without having to switch applications or open a browser.

Updated Yammer Conversations web part for SharePoint

A new Yammer web part is now available for SharePoint Online. With this update, your existing Yammer web part will automatically inherit the new Yammer styling and bring added features to your SharePoint sites and pages. Learn more.

Security and compliance

We’ve also added additional admin controls like Native Mode to help organizations better manage their data, privacy, security, and compliance needs. Learn more about Native Mode and how to prepare your Yammer Network for benefits like eDiscovery, local data residency and SharePoint file storage here.

Coming next

Featured Conversations – Yammer administrators can boost the visibility of critical messages in the Home feed by featuring the conversation to drive engagement.

External guests in Yammer communities – add people from outside your organization to your Yammer communities using Azure B2B, which ensures admins can manage user data, privacy, and compliance. This change will also enable communities with external guests to host live events, create custom policies for file storage and community creation, support local data residency and more.

Bring the new Yammer to your organization

Microsoft 365 Global Admins and verified Yammer Network Admins can configure access to the new Yammer through the Yammer admin portal. Admins can enable the toggle in the suite header and choose the default experience for their network: classic Yammer or the new Yammer. Learn more about enabling the new Yammer for your organization and see our detailed Frequently Asked Questions.

After an admin has enabled the new Yammer, users will access the new Yammer or switch back to classic using the toggle in the navigation bar.

Then people in your organization can use the toggle to switch between the new experience, and the classic experience in their home (canonical) networks. You will still see the classic Yammer experience in external networks.

Announcing a new Yammer 'Ask Microsoft Anything' (AMA)

Bring all your questions and feedback about the new Yammer to this 'Ask Microsoft Anything' (AMA) on Thursday, July 23, 2020, 9:00-10:00 AM PT. Members of the Yammer team will be online during this one-hour event to respond directly to your posts in the Yammer AMA discussion space.

New conversation experience for Yammer Mobile on iOS and Android

Yammer mobile iOS and Android apps keep you connected from anywhere - driving employee engagement and participation across the entire company. Earlier this year, we announced a preview of upcoming changes to the mobile experience, and now, Yammer’s superpowers are getting even stronger. Here's a look at how we’re building beautiful new mobile experiences to help you connect, discover, and share in a way that's easy on the thumbs and the eyes.

New Conversation Styling

A new card-based design sharpens content in the feed and helps you focus on the discussions that matter most to you. This is combined with a refreshed icon set, additional fonts and typography, new color palettes, and smoothed out spacing & indentations that create a delightful interface and encourages effortless scanning and comprehension.

We’ve also rebuilt the threading architecture to highlight interesting and relevant conversations and moved some additional message details to keep the focus on the main card. You can now find these message details, such as poster name, details, group, & list of participants, under the Action-sheet for iOS and Bottom-sheet for Android apps.

Replies that Pop

A new bubble layout organizes replies for mobile allowing the user to read more as desired. Similarly, we’ve added a “Read more” option in the feed to see additional conversations and expand threads.

Immersive look at images & files

The new grid view for images and documents makes it easy to preview and engage with multiple images and/or files while scrolling.

Link Previews

Link Previews captures image and text previews from almost any website. Additionally, links are now clickable directly from the feed cards so that you can get to the content you want to access faster.

Inline Videos

Videos in feed can now be played on the go with new inline video playback. Stream videos can also be played inline on iOS.

Many of these changes have already rolled out and some more are rolling out this week.
