  2. Remove an OS installation without removing files?

Its been a while since I did this sort of thing and I need help, I bought an 120gb SSD(Crucial M500) and will install windows 8 on it to be my boot OS/Drive later,

however I still have my very old Windows 7 installed on my 1TB drive(still currently my boot drive). I plan to keep most of the files in that Drive, but not the actual OS itself.. and I don't plan on dual booting, how can I remove the windows 7 on the 1TB Drive but still keep the non-OS files in there for backup purposes while I'm still setting up my new OS?

  3. RS Z28 Win User
    Dual booting OS

Dave is correct, However, If you take ownership of C:\ System (Windows) when you are booted to each OS. Then depending on why you are asking this, as in you do not want others to access the other OS, then Take ownership as mentioned. Then you MUST add your
user name in the list with full permissions/control. Then you would remove all users in the list

EXCEPT KEEP THESE>>YOUR NEWLY ADDED USER NAME, SYSTEM, AUTHENTICATED USERS

    REMOVE USERS>>>ADMINS, USERS & EVERYONE

Now for an OS you are booted to. You can add other users in the security users list for C:\ and/or C:\Users & C:\Users\Programs and Programs (x86) & C:\Windows

if there is others with user accounts on that OS. And then grant them the permissions you want to allow.

Because you have removed the user ADMINS, so they need to be granted permissions to access the OS as normal.

Look in Part 2 for detailed steps for ownership, permissions and sharing

Remove an OS installation without removing files?

    Fair point.

After reading the actual post, it seems like the OP just wanted to make sure the OS defaulted to the new install. Maintaining the old OS drive, until everything could be migrated, seemed like a more stable course of action than burning out the OS without having a proper backup. Apparently my reading was different than others.
