How to Enable or Disable Media Autoplay in Microsoft Edge in Windows 10

Microsoft Edge is a new web browser that is available across the Windows 10 device family. It is designed for Windows 10 to be faster, safer, and compatible with the modern Web.

Starting with Windows 10 build 17704, Microsoft added a new setting in Microsoft Edge to allow you to control whether sites can autoplay media.

You can customize the behavior according to your preferences:
    • Allow is the default and will continue to play videos when a tab is first viewed in the foreground, at the site’s discretion.
    • Limit will restrict autoplay to only work when videos are muted, so you‘re never surprised by sound. Once you click anywhere on the page, autoplay is re-enabled, and will continue to be allowed within that domain in that tab.
    • Block will prevent autoplay on all sites until you interact with the media content. Note that this may break some sites due to the strict enforcement – you may need to click multiple times for some video or audio to play correctly. Some sites may not work at all – in those cases, you can enable or block autoplay on a case-by-case bases from the website permissions pane (click the icon next to the address in the Address Bar).

This tutorial will show you how to allow, limit, or block if audio and video play automatically on sites in Microsoft Edge for your account in Windows 10.

Disable AutoPlay when audio devices connected

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To have a clarity on the issue and guide you accordingly, kindly help us with the following information:

    • Which build of Windows 10 is installed on the machine?

(Search winver from the Start menu to know the same)

The issue could be because of the AutoPlay option being enabled on the device. I suggest you to disable
AutoPlay for all media and devices and see if the issue persists.

    • Open Settings and click on Devices.
    • On the left pane, choose AutoPlay.
    • Toggle off Use AutoPlay for all media and devices,
      and exit Settings.
    • Reconnect the speaker to see if the media files continue to play.

If as suggested here, the end result is exactly the same registry change, there is no difference.

You can test that for yourself using a free utility called regshot. This takes a snapshot of the registry; you then make the change; take a second snapshot, then compare them.

All changes made between the two are listed.

    Windows 10 Autoplay

Have you checked the specific Autoplay settings for CDs an DVDs including the program\file associations for the different kinds of media they can hold? Windows has to know what to do with different file types, e.g. MP3s, MP4s JPGs etc.

Type 'Autoplay' into the Search Box on the Windows Task Bar and launch the Control Panel Autoplay Settings screen to check the settings thoroughly.

I also have a problem with autoplay in win 10. The DVD starts up then stops, however if I go into file explorer and then click on THIS PC the DVD starts up again and I get a message asking me what to do with the DVD.

    I have tried

Follow these steps to stop and start the Plug and Play service.

    • Press Windows key + R top open
      Run command
      .

    • Type services.msc and hit
      Enter
      .

    • Search for Plug and Play service. Check if it shows
running next to it as the status.

    • If yes, right click on the service and click on
      stop
      .

    • Now, again right click on it and click on
      start.

Also make sure that the AutoPlay option is
    enabled
on your computer. Follow the steps provided below:

    • Press Windows + X key.

    • Select Control panel.

    • Double click on AutoPlay option.

    • Check on the box, Use AutoPlay for all media and devices.
    and to no avail.

This laptop has a clean Win 10 installed but another laptop had an upgrade to win 10 and that works OK

    Any Ideas

    Thank

In the autoplay option from the control panel the AUTOPLAY option is enabled and all others in the list to use the default option.

Any other ideas please as I may have to clean build and start again

    Thanks Phil
