    Nighmare upgrading Win10 b1809 to b1909

I've been trying for weeks to get 1809 upgraded to 1909 but it keeps BSOD with various stop codes, everything from kernel security to cache problems.

The download phase works fine, reaches 100% downloaded then starts it's install bit while still in the Windows Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update screen. Then it says needs to reboot, so I choose "Reboot Now". It then does some updating while shutting down, which seems to work fine and reaches 100% before the soft restart. After the soft restart it starts installing and a few minutes in I'll get a BSOD often with some random stop code that I've not seen before. It will then restart again, spend some time "undoing changes" and then I get back to Windows login screen.

    Most recent failure:

    • Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909
    • Failed to install on ‎15/‎12/‎2019 - 0xc1900101

    Things I've tried:

    • sfc /scannow -- it mentioned some issues not fixed
    • dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth (and also /RestoreHealth) -- seems to complete successfully
    • chkdsk /f /r C: -- no errors found
    • the `net start/sop` stuff with renaming 2 folders in between stopping and starting -- `msi` and `bits` weren't running when I tried stopping them

Any ideas what else I could try?

    :)

Hi Guy. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator here to help you.

    1) Follow these steps for Overcoming Version Upgrade problems:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

    2) Update your drivers and BIOS/UEFI firmware from PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed
in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

Updating drivers from the Device Manager or Windows Update is rarely enough. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is keep the latest manufacturer's drivers installed from their Support Downloads web page.

    3) Consider doing the gold standard Clean Install in this link which compiles the best possible Install of Windows which will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given, has zero reported problems, and is better than any amount of money
    could buy:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

The reason I suggest this is that no one who has adopted the install in the above link has ever come back to report further problems I've seen, including another version failure. This is because everything in Windows 10 is dependent upon the quality of the
install, especially Version Updates which will choke on lesser quality installs. Whether we like it or not, this is where we are in Windows 10.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
