  1. No audio on PC since downloading Win 10 last year

    Hi there,

My nephew decided to download the untested version of Win 10 onto his PC last year which caused it to crash. After spending a whole day trying to save the PC, my husband who is not an IT technician but has some understanding, has been unable to retrieve the audio on the PC. So the unit works now, all except for the audio.

Is there a way to fix the audio or do you think it's probably cheaper to get a replacement PC?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

    :)

    Updates doesn't work can't install Win 10

Last year Win 10 was downloaded to my hardrive (I am using Win8.1) now I have tried to install it from the get win 10 in system tray it says its ready to install and goes to update page which stays searching and downloads nothing - on checking now I realize
it tried to install win 10 last year but failed and every other update failed since 9/9/2015 not a single update succeeded and it is stuck there.

  3. win 10 clean install

I need to use win 10 iso that I downloaded and installed on my pc last year using the win 7 product key. And I need to do a clean install again (formatting the hd myself), would it work if I used the same iso file from last year together with the win 7
    product key?

Assuming the audio is onboard then ensure your MOBO fw is current
Failing that you could look at installing an audio card, which would depend on the spare interfaces you have

  5. Thank you for that. I hadn't considered an audio card. Sorry for my ignorance, I'm not the most technical person I'm afraid but what is MOBO fw?

    Thank you,
    Suzanne

Hi Suzanne, MOBO is the motherboard (the main circuit board inside your PC)
Often the manufacture will release an updated fw (BIOS) to fix issues/add new features
Issues may be incompatibility with any newer version of the OS (Windows in this case)
The PC may have an app installed that allows you to 'talk' to the MOBO
You will then be able to view the BIOS ver. and reflash (update) to any newer version
Go to the manufacture's website, look for your MOBO, select support (or something similar) to see if there is a more recent BIOS ver.

Press Windows key + X key together. Select Device Manger from list that appears. Do you see any of the hardware listed with any errors, like exclamation points, or do you see anything listed as Unknown Device?

Another thing, is the Audio in device manager showing any yellow triangles as this would indicate an issue?
I'm also assuming that the sound settings have been checked, right click speaker icon in the system tray for options (bottom right)

  12. What happens when you try to launch Device Manager? What are you using for speakers? And what do you have connected as a monitor? If you have a video card with HDMI you basically have two sound cards. It may be something as simple as Selecting the proper playback device. I have a DVI monitor connected to my HDMI out. Windows will let me set HDMI as my sound playback device but I won't here anything. That monitor doesn't have any speakers. I have to select Speakers VIA HD Audio so I get sound to my speakers. Is there a speaker icon in the notifications area down by the clock? If yes does it have an X on it? If you click it it should show what is set to play audio. There will also be an up arrow or down arrow to change the selected playback device.

I think many questions can be answered if you'd please run these two reports

    List any Problem devices
    • Make sure devices are connected and powered on
    • Click the Start Orb (in lower left corner), type msinfo32 in the search box. Hit Enter
    • Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
    • Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
    • If yes, click on it, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy it, Ctrl-V to paste into next post
    • On the other hand, if no devices are listed, tell me so
Generate and attach a DirectX report

    • In the search box type dxdiag then hit Enter
    • Dxdiag window will appear. Notice progress in lower left window corner
    • When done, click Save Information button and save as a text file to your Desktop
    • Upload the file to your next post
