    Monitor - No Input Signal

So you are suggesting that in the event this cable goes for a six, I try out the HDMI port? Seems quite a tenable suggestion - I never thought of that!

  3. How best to watch TV from your PC?

    David,

From your description, I see that you are using purely analog video, not not only that, but the lowest possible quality output.

From the description of the converter box that you linked to, I see that you are starting out with an anlog VGA signal and converting it to composite. The reason that it looks good on a computer monitor is that VGA is a far superior signal to composite. For starters, there are completely seperate pins for the red, green, and blue color information. With composite video you are carrying all video information over a single wire - and that's just the start of the difference. Composite video, under even the best conditions is going to look like rubbish compared to VGA.

With all that said, I think that you are already doing the best that you can do, given the circumstances. Really, all you can do is convert that VGA signal to composite as you are doing now.

The only other suggestion that I can make would be to minimize the number of junctions you cross as well as the distance since analog signals will degrade with every physical connection and over distance.

NOTE: I do see that the adapter box has S-Video output in addition tho the composite. If your equipment, such as your TV has S-Video inputs I would strongly suggest making use of it since it has a far better quality output. You could still feed composite video to the VCR if needed and run a seperate composite connection from the VCR to the TV if needed for viewing the VCR output at a lower quality that the PC output.

    Hope that helps!
