    No DVD Burner in win10

After putting together some clips from my mobile and camera on Adobe Premier Pro, I tried unsuccessfully to burn the result to disc so it could be played in a DVD player. I have just learned that win 10 has dropped that facility (although I was able to copy a clip to a DVD-R disc and play it back on my PC).
I dowloaded the Ashampoo Free burner but now understand that I need DVD authoring software to convert my clips to VOB files. I seem to remember that in the past, my PC would convert to files that looked something like VT_S or similar. Can anyone point me towards a burner that will convert (or produce) the files needed to accompany my movie before it can be played on a DVD. (I have also read a MS disclaimer that says third party software may damage windows - are they intending to bring out their own version which will be "safe"). I am okay paying if I have to -ideally I want one programme that will do everything but the facilities offerd by some programmes are beyond my comprehension and I am most unlikey to use to the full.
    Thank you

    :)

whatever dvd burning software is used, windows 10 just freezes

Hello, thank you for the quick answer.

    First, about your questions:

The problem didn't happened when I burned the win10 iso file when I was in my win10 updated from win7. I burned the win10 iso, and did a clean install of win10 after that. I didn't though of testing the burner and didn't need to until yesterday. Win10 freezes
without any error message. Maybe the freeze is occuring as a consequence of inserting a blank dvd in the burner, not as a consequence of launching the burner software, as I recall I could use the soft until the moment I inserted the dvd. So I tried the driver
update as you said, as it seems it could be the reason. Unfortunately, the update said my driver is already up to date. And the troubleshooting isn't of any use so far.

By the way, the freezed state forced me to do a hard reboot, and by doing so I crashed my system: after that win10 just won't boot. I needed to use the win10 dvd to do a system repair (which worked great, that's a relief).

My Windows 7 before the initial upgrade to Windows 10 back in 2015 included DVD authoring software built in, called Microsoft Windows DVD Maker. It was clear from the release notes that, along with the Media Center and the ability to play DVDs in Windows Media Player, these were deprecated features that would be removed by the upgrade to Windows 10. I researched suitable alternatives before upgrading.

To play DVDs I installed VLC Media Player. For DVD authoring and burning I installed DVDStyler, available as a Portable App here...

...which (it turns out) is No. 1 in the Digitalcitizen 'best 5' list @bobkn gave you a link for.

Another vote for VLC here, excellent for watching DVDs.

    No DVD Burner in win10

Hi. Thank you for your quick response. I downloaded the suggested programme and was able to produce the necessary VOB files. I could not get the burner to work however. Although the programme recognises my burner as per screen, my PC tell me to insert a disc. I have used both my H and I drives, and also tried DVD+RW and DVD-R, both of which are compatible with the programme. Bree ( a forum guru), also suggested using DVD style.I downloaded that but got the same result. I know that you may not be clued up on the particular software, could there be an issue with the drives? when I check the device manager, things seem to be okay. I just feel that I am missing a step somewhere. When I used win 7, I didnt think about what I was doing, it just happened

In DVDStyler when you click the 'Burn' button you have three choices: 'just generate' (which just makes the file structure and VOB files), 'create iso image' (puts the files into an iso image that you can burn to DVD later) and 'burn' which will burn the files directly to a DVD that can be played in any DVD player. Sounds like you had the first option ticked.

Hi Bree. My pile of discs is getting low. I followed your guidance. Initially I tried to burn without formatting, and then with formatting (on different discs). The progresss reports in the screenshots tell the tale. I also tried WinX again. I even got a 98% completed before it spat my disc out - see screenshot. Incidentally, despite me using third party software, I still getting messages from the Windows system from time to time think "insert disc" and "files wwaiting to be burned". How can that be if windows hasnt included a burner (or is it just a hangerover from Win7 that hasnt been tidied up

I saw that question you posed to Bree so thought I'd 'horn in' with the info that I have used Win10 to burn data to DVDs and CDs from File Explorer and burn .iso files to create discs, just doesn't include a program needed to create video discs. I don't recall whether the feature in Windows Live Essentials 2012 will work on Win10 even though it is unsupported now, Mail/WLM will.

Windows 10 can burn data DVDs. It lacks a utility to create video disks.

Hi Bobkn. Got that, but my understanding is that the DVD authoring software creates files that enable you to burn video discs using a windows PC. Responses from others on the forum suggest that it is possible and the advertising blurb says that you can. Incidentally, I finally got something copied to a disc folowing the suggestion to burn from file explorer. I copied the Video_TS files (instead of VOB files) to the disc and played it back on my PC. I could not play back on my DVD Player - said cannot play this disc. Does that suggest thst the disc must be closed or mastered before use. The is no prompting either ion windows or the two third party programmes.
Everyone is so helpful that I just wonder if some is awry with my system somewhere. I can play back movies that I made using Win7 on the same DVD player

I'm not familiar with the formatting of DVD video disks, but I doubt that just copying files will get you there.

video_ts is a folder, not a file. It contains the data files, including the video (.vob).

You may want to stick with a version that can burn the DVD without any additional steps.

No, it won't. The disk has to be formatted to a specific standard too.

    DVD-Video - Wikipedia

DVD authoring software like DVDStyler can create a disk with the correct format, but it appears you are having problems successfully burning a disk.

Try experimenting with creating an ISO rather than burning direct to a DVD. That would eliminate your DVD drive or the disks as being a cause of your problems.

An ISO is an image of the DVD disk and can be mounted as a virtual DVD drive by double-clicking on it. Then you can play it like any other DVD in something like VLC Media player. When you're happy that the ISO works properly you can burn it to an actual DVD.
