Per MS: Remember to change those two registry settings back to '1' to re-enable the new updating method. I specifically inquired about that in the Win 10 developer forums @ MS and they said while it works now if your having issues downloading the 14986 update, leaving the registry settings to 0 or disabled will cause problems in the near future with respect to updates.

I too prefer to have the entire 'esd' file to create an ISO....which I did this time....but I don't know if it's just MS being overly cautious OR if it really will mess things up.

Obviously it makes sense to provide only the files which need updating due to download time/disk space, however, I prefer the entire ball of wax approach

No ESD for new build 14986 download?

    Hi,

If near future means once they found a way that allows end user to create their own ISO files from the builds then that's fine by me.
As it stands now that future seems quite remote....

Keep the hell away from Utorrent it's so buggy and lets in ads. I use (i dont use it much now) it Tixati No ads anything and way more secure..
    Tixati.com - Download
As for AVG Ugggg <shudder> talk about bog your system down with unnecessary crud. UI use Avast also free can register for a Free year and I have had NO problems with it, in over 10 years of using the Free version every year.

I just checked my registry and under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>WindowsUpdate>Orchestrator
I don't have the DWord EnableUUPScan. Should I add it or leave it as it is?

EnableUUPScan is removed from registry as unnecessary after a reboot when it and SupportsUUP are disabled (value 0). When UUP is disabled, scanning for existing installation to know what to upgrade is not necessary, upgrade does not need EnableUUPScan. A good example how Windows really can take care of registry all by itself.

Next upgrade will reset both values, setting SupportsUUP to enabled (value 1) and recreating EnableUUPScan setting it to enabled (1).

Thanks! I wasn't sure if it was needed or not. I wouldn't want to miss the next build when it's released. *Smile

Assuming the next build upgrade still comes as ESD and UUP version, you are ready to go with SupportsUUP = 0 and EnableUUPScan missing.

If (when?) the day comes that Microsoft simply does not provide the ESD build upgrade anymore, that only UUP method will be available, you need to set SupportsUUP to 1, manually create EnableUUPScan and set it to 1 as well.

I've tested this on Hyper-V virtual machines, first allowing both values be 1 (UUP enabled) and let Windows download the UUP upgrade, no ESD file. Before launching the upgrade I've then removed the BT folder, set both DWORD values to 0 (UUP disabled) and restarted from Restart now button in WU which causes Windows just to reboot normally because the upgrade files are missing. Windows Update picks the upgrade again immediately after restart, this time with ESD file.

Once again not doing the upgrade but instead deleting the BT folder, setting SupportsUUP back to 1, creating the now missing EnableUUPScan and setting it, too to 1, after the reboot WU again finds upgrade immediately, this time the UUP version.

I think the change was done when I used the ESD you posted to do a in-place repair install. I was trying to fix a problem I was having on my desktop. Turns out it was a hardware problem and the computer died. All it does now is turn on the fans. I don't even get the beeps when I remove the memory. I now have the SSD with my Insider build running on another desktop.

Never had problems with AVG Free slowing things down in over 20 years of using it. I also have no problems with Utorrent:
I don't watch it download, so the ads don't bother me.

BUT, after about 15 days of using build 14986, Potplayer now has no audio! Tried re-installing it. No joy.
UNACCEPTABLE! [I also have Realtek High Definition Audio Driver. This may also be the culprit, but again, UNACCEPTABLE!]

    Re-imaged to build 14971.
Then, used UUP version (after "Security" Update came out) and updated to build 14986.
Now Macrium Reflect free will not finish an image. Final stage of backup hangs.
Rebooted. Now, Macrium works. [Updated Utorrent; haven't tried Utorrent yet. Potplayer has audio, for now.
