  2. Windows 10 upgrade Forced......now what?

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium. I don't want Windows 10 because some of my apps aren't compatible (like quickbooks). Several times I've updated settings on Windows Update that would supposedly stop the install from happening. Today I got a popup
that said it was installed again and it was ready to upgrade with a reboot. There was no option to cancel. I went into windows update and found the install and unistalled it per directions I found on this board. However, the pop-up wouldn't go
away. I tried shutting it down with task manager but it kept coming back. I double checked that the install for the windows 10 was no longer on my computer, and confirmed it was gone. I tried doing a restart hoping that would get rid of the pop-up
that was in the way on my screen. Of course windows 10 is now installing on my PC. How long will this take? How long to back it out? I need this PC for work today. I have deadlines and now it is essentially a brick. What can I do?

    thanks for the help.

  3. Several Windows 10 upgrade attempts - no go

Before you resort to a "Clean Install" try using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Note: When you click on the above link, please read the instructions carefully.

    Step by Step:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install/re-installing-windows-10-after-returning-to/591819a5-4eb4-4bdc-95c7-1e98eb8b72ac

"IMPORTANT: To upgrade for free, select Upgrade this PC now in the tool. You should NOT be asked for a product key during the upgrade process. If you create a USB and use it to install, make sure to remove the USB as soon
as setup begins. If you don't, you may be prompted for a product key. If this happens, remove the USB and restart your PC to continue with setup.

Will you be running the tool from a 32 bit or a 64 bit device? Download the version for the device that will run the tool."

You can also download the Windows 10 ISO file(s) version 1511 from Microsoft's Tech Bench, create your own installation media and use it to install Windows 10:

How to use your Windows 7 / 8 or 8.1 Product key to activate Windows 10.

Activation in Windows 10 - Microsoft improves activation process in Windows 10:

"We have received a lot of feedback from Insiders on making it easier to activate Windows 10 on devices that take advantage of the free upgrade offer to genuine Windows by using existing Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product keys. If you install this
build of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on a PC and it doesn’t automatically activate, you can enter the product key from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 used to activate the prior Windows version on the same device to activate Windows 10 by going to Settings
    > Update & security > Activation and selecting Change Product Key. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 by booting off the media, you can also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup."

Additional information: Starting with the November update, Windows 10 (Version 1511) can be activated using most Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 product keys. For more info, see the section Activating Windows 10 (Version 1511 or higher)

    Activating after reinstalling Windows 10

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/activation-in-windows-10

How you activate Windows 10 after reinstalling it depends on how Windows 10 was originally installed on your device. If you activated a free upgrade to Windows 10 or bought and activated Windows 10 from the Windows Store, you have a digital entitlement for
your device. This means you can reinstall the same edition of Windows 10 that your device has a digital entitlement for without entering a product key. During reinstallation, if you’re asked to enter a product key, select Skip. Windows 10 will automatically
activate online after the installation is complete.

If you previously installed and activated Windows 10 using a product key, you’ll need to enter the product key during reinstallation.

How to find your Windows 7 product key after upgrading to Windows 10 You upgraded your PC to Windows 10 and now you want to reinstall Windows 7 or Windows 8 key:

    http://www.pagestart.com/win10shkeyplus02271601.html

Select the Start button icon button, then select Settings > Update & security > Activation. If Windows 10 isn’t activated on your device, see Get help with Windows 10 activation errors for more info.

One of the most common is a generic key associated with "Digital entitlement" computers. Digital entitlement is a new method of activation in Windows 10 that doesn't require you to enter a product key:

Windows 10 - What type of product key do I have?

Get help with Windows 10 activation errors: If you upgraded to Windows 10 for free and ended up in a non-activated state, try following these steps:

Select the Start button icon button, then select Settings > Update & security > Activation.

Note: I suggest you make an Image Backup (to an external USB drive) of your current version of Windows before you attempt the upgrade. Should anything go wrong during or after the upgrade you can use the backup to restore your previous version.

Try again from the iso and make a note of the error codes it reports. Then look at this reference to find out what they mean and what steps you can take to resolve them.

I remember the first time the code was ??????? followed by something to do with a driver error. I will try again with the latest ISO and let you know. Thanks all for your help to this point. I might add someone said something in relation to legacy settings in the BIOS. Forgot what that was about though.

But before i do that i will try again with secure boot in the bios off. Having just said that i did a clean install the other day with same results. And on top of that i tried two different versions of Linux. They would run off the USB, ie that was live, but when install was almost done sent an error, nowhere to install grub. So now i have got secure boot off and will see what happens. I have a memory problem as i have had a cerebral aneurysm clipped. It plays with my memory all the time. Will keep you posted.
