No HP logo splash screen after installing GTX 1060

Thank you. I'll give it a BIOS update in the next few days. Don't want to risk being without a PC over Xmas if anything goes wrong!

  2. Read the instructions carefully, maybe even print them out. Don't do it on a stormy day where you might get a power bump etc. If you have a UPS, use it on that PC during the BIOS upgrade. I've done several BIOS upgrades with no issues. A power bump or power failure right in the middle is what usually gets people into trouble. Or not understanding exactly what they are doing. It's a lot better than it used to be. A lot of good quality motherboards have BIOS backup/dual BIOS, and BIOS recovery options built in.

Many thanks for that, Alpha. I will tread carefully! Never done a BIOS update before, but I gather that my PC actually has a "back up" just in case. The reason behind the GTX 1060 GPU upgrade is that I want to stretch this PC's legs and get max everything when playing games (and why not?!). With the games nowadays, the i7 and 16Gb RAM are easily up to it, but the GTX 770 2Gb may be a bit of a bottleneck going forward. Maybe it is just me, but I would love to solve this issue, as others may have this in the future. Thanks.

No HP logo splash screen after installing GTX 1060

I updated the BIOS. All went OK. For some reason I got a "cannt upadte due to no dll.32" (or something along those lines) installed. But it updated and re-flashed the BIOS anyway. It must have worked OK, or I would not be typing this! And the PC does indeed show the new BIOS version. But still no HP logo. But I found the solution from the HP forums. It reads as follows:

"Try enter BIOS then in Security disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Boot.

Save changes and exit. Enter four digit confirmation at reboot to confirm the change.

HP has custom keys installed in Secure Boot for the GTX 770.

Legacy mode will allow the new graphics to run."

This has sorted it. All is now as before and works well (logo appears, etc). This may help other users who have issues like this in the future when upgrading components in OEM builds. Thanks everyone for the help.

  5. "cannot update due to no dll.32" < You must have used Winflash? I usually don't do it that way, more to go wrong etc. All sorted in any case so happy computing.

Thanks, Alpha. I actually downloaded the update file from the HP consumer website after I checked for updates. I double-clicked on the file as per instructions and let it continue. File was named as "HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2B36". But it did worry me when the "cannot update" notification briefly appeared. But, as you say, it must have worked OK. Or I wouldn't be typing this! I suppose that if anything had gone wrong then the PC would not boot.

  7. Go into the BIOS and check the version number. That will tell you if it updated or not. *Wink Some high end motherboards have Dual BIOS and or flash protection. What it's called and how it works depends on the manufacturer. If the flash fails, and its corrupted, it falls back to a backup copy of the original unflashed BIOS. In the old days you'd just get a totally black screen with no BIOS Beep. And a door stop or something cool to hang on the wall. *Wink

Just had a look. It does indeed give the updated BIOS version number, and the BIOS date (29th December 2016 in my case), which I presume is the date the new BIOS was flashed. Phew. New version number A0.13 as opposed to the old version (A0.07).
