Windows 10: No Install.esd or C:\RecoveryImage

I have started with 10130 and have 10166. I am not finding install.esd or C:\RecoveryImage in my installation. Somewhere in forum I read install.esd is available in $windows.~BtT folder. When I did search I am not finding it in C:\. Am I missing something?

I have a HP Stream with a small 32 gb hard drive and I ran WirDirStat to see what was taking all the space.

I found 3 files of 2.6 gb named install.esd in 3 different folder. I understand that they are use to install windows but do I need all of them? I haven't found anything online about having 3.

The $windows.~BtT folder is a hidden OS folder, and won't show unless you set Windows to show hidden OS files using step 4 of OPTION ONE above. *Smile

Thanks for the response. I have enabled visibility of hidden OS folders. Still I donot see Recovery image folder in C: drive. Search of C:\ drive for install.esd does not show the location of the folder. I did reboot after enabling the folder options. Still no solution. Any thing more please?

 

Follow the instructions given by Brink to view hidden files and folders.

Go to your C:\ drive and find a folder named $Windows.~BT

Click on the Sources folder and find the file Install.esd

 

there are several places to find the download file.
"C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Install.esd"

or open file explorer and search the windows\softwaredistirbution folder for *.esd

"C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DeliveryOptimization"
"C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download"

even after getting an error message (did not click retry this go round - doing so removes the esd )and even after rebooting - the esd was still there

Something has deleted it.

I upgraded to 10166 about 3 hours after it appeared. I had previously done a disk cleanup to remove the Windows .old folder from10162.

I now have no windows.old folder , no $windows-BT folder either. I can view hidden and system files. I copied install.esd shortly after it downloaded and prepared an iso from it with ESDtoISO, so I'm not dreaming it!

I have not deliberately removed the folder. My recycle bin is empty.

I am not finding it there.

There are no esd files in any of the folders you have provided. I have sorted sources folder based on file size. Highest sized file is windowsold.wim only.

 

Did you upgrade via Windows Update or did you use the iso you made to install from? I know you said you saved install.wim after the upgrade created it but did you continue with the upgrade or did you kill it then install from the iso?

 

I initially installed version 10130 and I upgraded after that to 10159, 10162 and finally 10166. After 10162, I did disk cleaning to clean Windows.old and $Windows.~BT folders. Now after last upgrade, I am keeping these folders to see install.esd. But unable to see so far.

 

I had an similar experience with the early builds of W10. A search for .esd could not find anything.
Starting around build 10122 the install.esd file could be found in $Windows.~BT\Sources folder.

 

windows 10 no longer uses a Recovery Image (install.wim / esd) - they have changed the way windows 10 recovers - they have also changed the partition layout.. Windows now reconstructs itself using the component store and it is a windows only recovery (reconstruct.wim)
if you want to include your installed programs - you now need to create a provisioning package (custom.ppkg)

Go into control panel - recovery - create a recovery drive (on newer builds) and windows builds the recovery image
if you mount the reconstruct.wim - you'll notice it does not look like a full OS layout (mounted install.wim)

they moved the WinRE partition (recovery Tools partition) from the first partition to the last partition
