Hello,Everything works fine but about 2 weeks ago I don't remember exactly well, all new videos created or imported on my PC don't display thumbnails anymore Windows 10 x64 Pro 22H2 last update excepted for .wmv and some .avi. Those that had their thumbnails in cache kept them. It's ONLY for videos, no problem for pictures.I tried a lot of thing found on internet from solutions that are for global thumbnails problem videos and pictures. If I delete the cache for thumbnails, thumbnails are created again for pictures but not for videos.Strange fact, if I use "Photos" app as the default rea

  2. Video thumbnails not showing up in Windows Explorer.

So I've been having this problem for several months now..

One day some of my video thumbnails weren't showing, so I deleted the thumbnail cache, and then they were all gone and never returned. It was like Windows lost the ability to create thumbnails for videos, and as I moved videos around over time windows never generated new thumbnails for them.

I have photo thumbnails, but not video thumbnails, and video thumbnails don't show up in other programs either, such as Media Player, or in alternatives to Windows Explorer, such as One Commander. It's like Windows has lost the ability to create video thumbnails. And only video thumbnails.

I also don't get any video previews in Windows Explorer's Preview Pane; but again I do get previews for photos and other files, PDF, etc.

And it's the same on all 4 of my hard drives, so it's not drive specific.

I have tried a lot of stuff such as:

    • Deleting the thumbnail cache.
    • SFC.
    • DISM.
    • Edit Group Policy.
    • Explorer>Options>View>Always display icons, never thumbnails (checked and unchecked)
    • Resetting Media Player settings (in case that interfered with it).
    • Rebuilt the search index.
    • Searched REGEDIT for "thumbs", but nothing stood out.
    • Deleted temporary files.
    • Virus and malware scans.
And I've probably tried various other stuff too that I've forgotten about.

Is there anything else I can check?

How exactly does Windows build thumbnails, is there some code, or a .dll file somewhere? Or is there some codec or media player feature that grabs a snapshot of the file or something?

Does Windows handle video and photo thumbnails differently?

I also don't have any thumbs.db files, anywhere (is this even still a thing?), even in folders with photos and thumbnails in them, even though I have turned on the option to show protected operating system files and hidden files.

Anybody know what's going on here?

Video thumbnails not appearing on Windows 10

A few months back the thumbnails for my video files (.mp4) stopped appearing and now just appear as the stock video icon after I believe I downloaded and installed WinRAR. However, my image files (.jpg, .png, and .gif) are still fine. Over time, sometimes when I have downloaded a video or gif, suddenly the videos in my downloads folder would be restored and after I placed some videos in the video folder, they were restored too. However, this was not the case for videos in other folders that I have that I primarily use. Today I had a lot of videos in my downloads folder with thumbnails but after I downloaded another video suddenly now none of my videos in ANY FOLDER have thumbnails, even the ones in the video folder but my image files are still fine and all have their thumbnails.

I have tried pretty much every solution the internet lists, such as restoring file explorer to default setting, making sure it's set to thumbnails not icons, clearing the thumbnail cache, using disc clean up, and now even an SFC scan and restarting file explorer but nothing has worked. Did antivirus scans with multiple pieces of software and none of them detected anything. I'm not a very tech savvy person so I have no clue what's wrong and why nothing will fix it. I have seen a few articles mention messing with OneDrive but I never use it. However, looking at OneDrive it does have an error icon on one of the folders with videos it but it does not even list other folders that also are having this issue. I have never had this issue on any of my previous devices. Is it possible that the WinRAR I downloaded caused this? But then how come nothing fixes it even though I deleted WinRAR almost immediately after I downloaded it? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Inserting Thumbnails in Video Files..... !?

That is really complicated. See this thread posted in another forum:

Video Thumbnails: How to Edit? - VideoHelp Forum

I would suggest organising videos into appropriately named folders and give each video a name that identifies what it is.

Note: I've tried various video managers including Veehive and some of them can let you grab a thumbnail to use - mostly those chosen thumbnails are not displayed in Explorer even with MediaPreview installed. Instead thumbnails are auto generated.

I like this software to browse videos:

Diffractor: Find and organize - photos, videos and audio.

You might want to test it. Navigate to a folder containing video then hover mouse over thumbnails.

A quick demo video. Video can be played within Diffractor and additionally opened in other installed media player. Towards the end of the demo video you see a video opened in PotPlayer with timeline thumbnails. You also get timeline thumbnails in Diffractor.
