    Toby, can I ask are you using Audio Software like Realtek?

    If so, please check this:

    Open the Realtek HD Audio Manager , and check the 'Disable front panel jack detection' option, under connector settings in the right side panel

    If you have installed the Realtek software, open the Realtek HD Audio Manager, and check the
    Disable front panel jack detection option under connector settings in the right side panel.

    No option to disable front jack detection Realtek 6.0.1

    You only get the notification that you have plugged sthg in (assuming that's what you mean you are missing) if the setting at the bottom is selected and you then have a small red speaker icon in your system tray.

    Lose the speaker icon, no notification.
