Windows 10: No Sound after Windows 10 upgrade

After the Win 10 upgrade, (running Firefox) Pandora, U tube, Quicktime, and Itunes audio all quit working....
this is what I have in the Manage Audio Devices control panel:

Speakers / Headphones
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Default Device (green check mark)

Communications Headphones
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Not Plugged In

Digital Output (S-PDIF)
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Ready

When I right click the default device and hit "test" - I get a nice and normal sounding audio test through my dual speaker / subwhoofer system. The only other place I've been able to get audio, is when I open the Windows Media Player, and play a video file with an .mts extension - sound plays just fine... however, .mov and .mp4 files in Win Media player videos will not play audio. Just so you all are clear, I'm sure I could easily explain just why the heck that is but what can I say?

the first thing I tried was to update the driver in Device manager/ I also tried manually selecting and installing the High Definition Audio Device windows driver which is available, but I lost even the little bit of working audio I had...

Here's hoping for a solution - getting rather tired of this "quality" time I'm spending with my computer just so I can get things back to where they were before the upgrade....

What else should I try?

I got a HP Elite 6930p notebook. After I got the free upgrade of window 10, everything is okay except the audio system. The notebook now become dead-mute.

The HP support site is the answer to the last question first which would seem to cover all. You may have to go with a Win 8.1 update if none are out for 10 which are not for the HP Pavillion P6 2477 while the P6 2427 is found with 8 and 8.1 updates available out of the list of models in that series. If you mistyped the model number off by a digit when filling in your system specs that would explain that. Otherwise you would need to provide other information possibly like serial number or look up the specific model page at the HP support site itself in order to match things correctly.

The other option if problems persist would be to consider seeing a full clean install of 10 with the updates option left unchecked and then go manually for the correct drivers and apps once 10 is up and running properly. The test for sound does suggest the correct device drivers went on but not the correct app as a possible cause. As for WMP MS stripped the guts out of the default media which now no longer supports videos and dvd playback.

The Windows DVD Player should have arrived by now which is seen as a free incentive arriving separately to stay with 10. But if you see a clean install you would then need to buy that separately from the MS online store to see replaced. Many opt for the VLC Player being a free open source player now available at the MS store. And as for FF and other browsers you might need to grab the last Adobe Flash Player download.

With a separate PCIe sound card here the upgrade by update to the last Windows Insider Preview build saw a stall with the sounds assigned to Windows functions where some would work only some of the time. Now that a new build just when on and the February 8.1 update had to be used again which brings up the web auto updater the latest 10 drivers were then to go on and all works! FF still sees a bug with the embedded videos on web pages at times however.

 

This is an interesting problem, however, I have an old HP Pavilion laptop that has IDT audio drivers. That laptop is running Vista so it doesn't really help, but the drivers for it are buggy as hell and I can't configure even the built in speakers. I would recommend finding out what sound card you actually have installed, and what drivers are compatible, and avoid IDT drivers if at all possible. Realtek has been the way to go for a long time, even my HP Pavilion 17-f048nr came with Realtek (granted it is the model with Beats audio, which is not really an improvement by the way). I can't guarantee that Realtek drivers will work, but if they do, the quality would be a huge upgrade.

 

First it would help knowing the exact model number since the only P6-247xC anything found is the 247C not the 2477 while there is a 2400 model series. A look at specifications should show what audio chip is in use. For the HP Pavilion p6247c you would and should already be seeing Realtek drivers in use.

That was found at the HP Customer Support section. HP Pavilion p6247c Desktop PC Product Specifications It helps to know if that is the actual model number seen in the user manuals as well as on the factory label information. No p62477c to find anywhere.

 

Well it turns out that my problem was an old logitec headset that was plugged into the back of the tower. My speakers were plugged in to the "rear" speaker jack below the audio input/output jacks which the skype headset was plugged into. When I unplugged the old logitec skype headset, the main speakers weren't recognized anymore (shown as not plugged in even though I hadn't touched the jack). I moved the main speaker jack up into the output jack that the logitec skype headset had been plugged in to and my sound problem was solved.....

Everything was fine in terms of sound before the windows 10 upgrade. You guys/gals probably have a more specific idea of what the problem might have been - I'm just glad it's sorted itself out....

oh, and yes I had miss typed the model # - it was the 2427c....

 

A little late now but it wasn't the drivers as you found out! At least it was a fast solution however.

For speaker sets some will see a headphone jack right on the center mix speaker along with the power, volume, and balance, tone controls. That might be something to consider.

Or you can also go with usb headsets and avoid the misplugin type of mishap from time to time. The only time anything gets unplugged here is when I have to take care of the monthly cleaning to get any dust out! I have more to plug back then what you have there likely! Have to patch in video gear as well as the old Logitech 5.1 speakers. *Biggrin

Just checked up on the correct number you provided and that model sees 8, 8.1 support unlike the other which was only showing 7 and 10.
