Windows 10: No sound comes from my Windows 10 computer unless I attach external speaker

Hello --


I can get no sound from my Windows 10 computer unless I attach external speaker via bluetooth or audio-out plug.


Any suggestions on how to fix this?


Further details:

- I have a reconditioned Lenovo ThinkPad T430s, running Windows 10 Pro

- The Sound tool on taskbar, when adjusted, changes volume on external speaker or headphone, but even at max volume, no sound is audible from machine itself.

- The only internal sound controller is the default Speaker/HP Realtek High Def. audio

- I ran Troubleshoot under Settings>System>Sound: Device Properties. It identified no issue other than "Generic Audio Driver." It reinstalled the audio driver, but after I restarted machine, the troubleshooter identified the same issue.

- Under Settings...Manage Sound devices, the output device is marked disabled. (See image at end of this message.) I selected the device, disabled (yes) then enabled it, but it remained marked disabled, even after restart.

- Under Properties for the Realtek audio, Device Status states "This device is working properly."

The driver version is 6.0.1.7614, date 9/15/2015.

Adding external speakers


Depending on the built in sound device on the MB. Some support 2.1/5.1/7.1 and also optical audio out. Just plug in the cable that comes with the speaker to it then switch the sound output for the speaker.

1. Sound input to speakers
2. Some high end speakers support digital sound then you would use an optical cable.
3. Sound input to TV using HDMI cable

 

No sound from external speakers

• Have you made any changes prior to the issue?
• Is the external speaker detected in the Device Manager?
• Is there any error messages that you are getting?
• Have you tried connecting the speaker to another device?

external sound lost

I have been trying your suggestion. Unplugged device (speakers) and plugged back in. A pop-up window read "you just plugged a device into the audio jack". reads Realtek HD Audio Manager.

Checked the ^ and it lists 2 things: Speaker/ Headphones which when clicked no sound at all. The other is Dell S2415H (Intel(R) Display Audio) which seems to be the monitor speaker. Not much sound comes through even at 90 setting.

I believe what I did was went to settings. Clicked on devices. went to Audio and not knowing the ramifications removed the "external speakers" which I have no idea what they were listed as.
