Everything is working now. Would having the cable with the each end being green have anything to do with them not working right? What I am saying is, if I were to plug one end to the computer whereas it’s supposed to go to the monitor and the other end that goes into the tower into the monitor, would that make a difference in sound not working?

With danger of sounding like a politician, I can't deny or admit that they are speakers but sound is not coming thru VGA (mini D 15) connection.
Are there any other connectors an that monitor, like a 3.5mm or two RCA ? There's also another component any monitor with sound would have to have, and amplifier because any sound coming fro a computer doesn't have enough power to drive speakers directly.

  3. @CountMike: One of these ends connects to the tower and the other end connects to the monitor.

Oh that green one, yes that's for sound but looks like a bypass only. Looking at that picture, it should go from sound Out (Green) on a computer to the blue one instead as it's marked as Input. Is that a DVI connector to the left of VGA one ? DVI-D type can carry sound signal, DVI-I and A can not. HDMI, Display port and variants carry digital sound and require Digital to Analog converter at receiving end.

  5. It’s the DVI-D type. The computer cake with a cable that’s white for that. But I never knew how it worked.

Use DVI if you can, it's digital, while VGA is analog signal.

    I don't understand your post.

It looks like the monitor has audio, through an analog input. (Green port on PC's audio output.)

I'd also use the DVI connection, although I doubt that it makes a significant difference in practice.

Blue port on the monitor is input for sound so to have any chance of getting (if there are speakers in monitor) analog sound from computer is to connect it to green output on computer.
Blue (on monitor) > Green (on computer). Green connector on the monitor is pass thru to connect some external speaker or headphones to it.
As for VGA vs. DVI, apart from possibility to let sound thru is that less possible interference to signal and ability to use much longer cable. DVI could also be used to convertto HDMI or display port while VGA would need an active converter.

  9. I couldn’t use the DVI cable, because the computer doesn’t have a DVI cable hookup. However, there is a DVI hookup on the monitor. Why would Acer supply a DVI cable when there’s not a way to plug it up to the computer? The monitor’s port for the wire with the green ends is not blue. It’s black.

It's probably just a standard monitor they supplied with other computers hence also other connectors and cables to go with it.
That middle sound connector is clearly marked as output.

I see that the PC has only VGA and HDMI video ports.

If Acer supplied a DVI cable with the monitor, they also should have provided a HDMI male to DVI female adapter. If you were interested in using the digital interface, and don't have such an adapter, Amazon has them for a few dollars.
