    Stereo Audio Bleeding

    Hi,
I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. I'm having an issue with audio bleeding in stereo channels. If I pan audio 100% left I can hear it in the right channel at about 20% and vice versa, even though levels are showing 0% for that channel. I'm not using any special equipment, just headphones plugged into my PC. I'm using Realtek drivers.

    Things I've tried:

    • Installing latest drivers
    • Installing old drivers
    • Using basic Windows drivers
    • Disabling on-board audio and connecting a separate sound card
    • Disabling all audio enhancements
    • Clean install of Windows 10

I've also tried plugging my headphones into a different PC running Windows 7 with no issue. I don't know what else to try to fix it. Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Set Headphones to 5.1 or Stereo

This is because consoles such as the Xbox and PS4 have standardised audio agreement. All console games come with high definition audio PCM 2.0 / 5.1 / 7.1 as standard. Consoles have licences for Dolby Digital and DTS (HD and non HD). So the aspiration for high quality audio is there from the beginning.

With PC games its up to the individual developers to decide on the quality of the audio. There is no agreement for a minimum standard. Hence why some PC games have good audio and others have mediocre audio.

Yes as I explained a few posts back. Windows does NOT acknowledge 5.1 headphones if it only has one audio input jack. As far as windows is concerned its stereo. Windows doesn't give a flying fuck that the box says "7.1 virtual surround headphones". Windows sees 1 green line-in as stereo. This is why the stereo option sounds better. It's then up to your headphones hardware or DSP to upmix the stereo to virtual 5.1 or 7.1.

The only way to improve your audio further is to find headphones with TWO or more audio inputs. That way Windows will recognise it as a legitimate surround system and you can select 5.1 in games and enjoy more audio streams. IMO it would be cheaper to invest in a homes theatre system because the money you are spending on all these headphones seems ridiculous.

no stereo audio coming from my headphones in windows 10

How do I enable Stereo Mix when my headphones are plugged it?

I do not use USB headphones. My headphones are plugged into the stereo audio jack in my laptop. My laptop is a Dell, and it is running Windows 10.

Usually using Stereo Mix (which appears as an entry in the "recording" tab in the Windows audio control panel), I'm able to have sound recording software monitor and record the output to the speakers. This is useful when running software that produces sound, but has no feature to save the sound to a file. Stereo Mix allows me to run separate software to record the sound, as it plays from the first piece of software, so I can save the sound to a WAV file.

Unfortunately. This seems to only work when my headphones aren't plugged in. As soon as I plug in headphones, Stereo Mix stops recording the audio signal coming out of the speakers. How does Stereo Mix work? Does it work digitally to record the data being sent to the audio hardware? Or is it actually an analog-to-digital-converter that measures the analog voltage being sent to the speakers? Is Stereo Mix simply incapable of measuring the analog signal that goes to the headphones, because headphones use different wires to carry the signal than is used by the internal speaker (thus preventing Stereo Mix from being able to even see the signal)?

If it's not a problem with diffferent wires being used in the hardware for the headphones, then it must be a problem with how the sound drivers are programmed, as if it's not a hardware defect, then it should be able to record the digital data being sent to the audio hardware (regardless of whether the final destination of the signal is the headphones or the internal speakers).

I hope somebody can solve this, and recommend a way to enable Stereo Mix to be used, even when the headphones are plugged in.
