  1. Not able to reenable device encryption on Windows 10 Home with my local account.

So I made the stupid mistake of disabling device encryption thinking it would fix issues with Dell Update (which it didn’t). Now when I try to enable it again I get this message: “You need a Microsoft Account to finish encrypting this device.”

Do I really need a Microsoft account? It was enabled without one.

Strange Windows 10 User Account issue.

Unfortunately I had done those steps numerous reboots, it just, reappears for no good reason. The base account isn't even a Microsoft account, it's a local account.

I haven't quite tried the built in administrator account on W10, but so far in my experience on my own computer, the built in account seemed to have absolutely no more control than I did on my own.

It's just strange, I go in, it warns me twice about deleting the account, then it's gone. Reboot, and it's back?

EDIT: Just to specify, both command line and Netplwiz both say only HIS account exists on the computer, it doesn't list this rogue account. This is what I meant in my first post about the fact that even Windows doesn't seem to believe it exists, HALF the time. *Frown Not able to reenable device encryption on Windows 10 Home with my local account. :(

Device Encryption - Turn On or Off for Windows 10 Mobile Phone

thanks for the tip. yes, the phone did ask if I wanted to set a pin. I tried my tests with the pin set and without a pin set. no difference.

it took a while, but I finally got this new update installed.

    alas, same pathology:
    • with a local Device Encryption toggled On, no dialog, no change in Storage status
    • with an activesync policy from Google Sync (Google for Work), the Requires Encryption policy is ignored by the device, so the toggle remains Off, yet the device seems to be reporting back to the server that encryption is activated because the data is syncing with the servers
    • with a native Office Enterprise that has a Requires Encryption policy, the settings toggle is moved to On and greyed out so the user cannot disable, the data is syncing immediately, yet the Storage settings do not indicate that the device is encrypted.

last thing. with windows 8.1r2, the Office Enterprise did seem to set the encryption correctly.

    still puzzled.

Encryption feature in Windows 10 Pro for File protection

    To turn on device encryption
    1. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account (you may have to sign out and back in to switch accounts). For more info, see Create
a local or administrator account in Windows 10
      .
    2. Select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & Security > Device encryption. If Device encryption doesn't appear, it isn't available. You may be able to turn
      on standard BitLocker encryption instead.
    3. If device encryption is turned off, select Turn on.
To turn on standard BitLocker encryption
    1. Sign in to your Windows device with an administrator account (you may have to sign out and back in to switch accounts). For more info, see Create
a local or administrator account in Windows 10
      .
    2. In the search box on the taskbar, type Manage BitLocker and then select it from the list of results. Or you can select the Start button, and then under Windows System, select Control Panel.
In Control Panel, select System and Security, and then under BitLocker Drive Encryption, select Manage BitLocker.

Note: You'll only see this option if BitLocker is available for your device. It isn't available on Windows 10
