Windows 10: Not able to restore windows system image from an hard drive

Hi, I recently backed up my system image to an 1TB External HD. I installed a new ssd in my laptop and did a fresh windows 10 install. But one of my 4tb Western Digital External HD didn't get unlocked even after entering the correct password. So i wanted to restore to the previous version of the system image in which that WD HD was unlocked and wouldn't need me to enter the password, because my understanding is that when i did a backup of the previous system it will have my settings and devices details stored.


Now coming to the actual problem, i am not able to restore the windowsimagebackup. I have made a windows iso boot usb drive, connected my external HD which has backup and when i boot from that i get to the main windows install page which has the language selection, region etc and in the bottom "repair computer".


-By clicking on that i went into troubleshoot, advanced options, system image recovery.


-Then another window titled "Re-image your computer" opens up where there is details of the system image backup with the location, date & time and computer from my HD.


-Then i clicked on next which opens up the additional restore options. Clicking next leads to another window which confirms the details of the system image. This is where I click on finish. Then there is a warning saying the disk will be formatted and replaced by the system image.


-Then the process starts and immediately it says "the system restore has failed".


-Clicking on error details opens up a window which has a lot of information.


-The message briefly reads "No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found. Try the following" there are another 12 lines of the that message and code 0x80042412.


Can any of guys let me know where i'm going wrong and find a solution to this problem, i would really appreciate that. Thanks in advance.

To be able to help you with the appropriate troubleshooting steps, please reply with the following details:

• Are you trying to restore the system image or create a system image?
  
• Are you able to see the external drive in File Explorer?
  
• Could you please briefly explain the procedure that you are following to initiate a system image restore?

Not able to Restore using System Image

Hi,

Your concern about using a system image can be due to the configuration of your device. To better understand your concern, we'd like to know the following:

• If the existing system image stored on your external hard drive was created when your device is already on Windows 10.
• If you've tried using other USB ports on your device.
• The version and build of Windows 10 that you're using on your computer. To check this, you can perform the steps posted on this
  
  link.

To isolate your concern, we'd recommend creating another system image. A different system image can be saved on your hard drive as long as there is enough storage space in it. In the event that there isn't enough space, we'd recommend moving the system image
file to another drive to free up the space.

Free hard drive backup/restore program?

I am looking for a free (freeware) program that will back up and restore a hard drive. I'm looking to clone a few external hard drives. If the program will backup the used space instead of the whole drive this will be awesome! Thanks for any suggestions.
