Windows 10: Not possible to define a default application by type of file

Good morning,


since a few weeks, every time I try to open an excel, word or illustrator file (just as examples) I get the following error:




When I try to go to set the default app by file type setting, I see that the .ai file has no application assoviated with it.



If I click on the plus icon, this is what I get:



The program is of course installed since it was working before this happened.

Even if I go to the file and click on open with, I get the chance to click on "look another app on this PC" but when I click on the program, I get the same error in the first image.

Do you have any suggestion to help me solve this issue?

Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10  


Not to pester you, but it is inconvenient to "open with" every single time, and I remain quite perplexed why every other possible file extension appears to be listed in "Settings/System/Default apps/CHOOSE DEFAULT APPS BY FILE TYPE" but not .zip. It has always been possible prior to Windows 10 to associate ANY file extension with a default program. I'm not sure what you mean by ".zip is not listed by default." How else would one permanently associate a program with a file extension? The link I gave you, provided again below, as well as others I could find - indicates that that other people have .zip listed in their file type listings. Have you checked your listings available at location I've specified above? I have ... .yps, .z, .z96... and no .zip. Do you not see a .zip extension either but see essentially all others? Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild


Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done *Smile I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.

The above issue might have occurred due to the presence of missing system files and folders on the computer.



Before we assist further, did you try setting the default file type application from system
Settings page?



Follow the steps below to set default program/application to open a particular file from system
Settings page and check if the issue is resolved.

  Press Windows logo key on the keyboard, type
  Default programs and select the top most search result.
  
• 
  Scroll down the page and click on Choose default apps by file type from the window.
  
• 
  Locate the file format, click on the program which is set to open the file type and select the application you want to set from
  Choose an App window.
  
• 
  Close the window and check if you are able to open the file type in the application set as default.
