Windows 10: Notepad/Paint/Defragment not opening from Search bar

hai

simple enough question. i used to be able to type "notepad" or "note" in the search windows box, and when the result pops up, i can click enter and it would run. or i can choose to run it as administrator or something. but somehow now i can't launch it from clicking the mouse or pressing enter. it's just there. paint also is acting this way, but paint 3d works fine.

so i had to go to root directory and pin notepad to start menu so i could right click or open it. i know i can win+r instead but i'd just like to know if theres a solution to this. thanks

I realize that on Windows 10 right-click close task bar program doesn't show Save/Cancel pop-up. I will try to help you with this issue.

When you open notepad or Paint and if you do not type anything in the notepad or draw anything in the paint then when you close notepad from task bar it will close without giving you the pop up to save or cancel. However if you have typed something
in notepad and without saving if you want to close that notepad then you cannot do that unless you save it.

This behavior is by design. It is how the feature is structured by the makers of the Operating System.

Paint etc missing from start menu and won't open if I can find them through search

So, I found my missing start apps and files and this seems to be a bug. I'm not sure what caused it but the paint and notepad apps would not open or be found in search until I opened files that use those apps, in those apps. For example, I had to open
a png file of mine in paint before I could find the app again via search and once again pin it to start. For notepad I had to open a text file in notepad to find it and pin it to start again. To find the Windows Accessories and Administrative Tools files (which
were missing from start and program files) I had to do overall C: searches. In the results of those searches I found two copies of each file. One of the copies of each file was completely empty and the other was the actual file with the contents inside.

 

Strange, I have just had my notebook update to the new "Creative" 1703 version... when I type "note" in search I get "Notepad" appear at the top, click it and notepad opens..

 

yeah it was working before for me too, no problem at all. i recently reset my pc and chose the selection of keeping my files intact, then this problem appeared. one problem goes away, another shall rise to overshadow the old one. it's the never ending battle between machine and humans that would lead nowhere, but abyss

 

Sounds like the "reset" has not done it's job 100% *Sad

As I say mine updated via Windows update last night to the new version and I always panic a bit Lol.... you read things on here and other sites of all the issues, but then again sites like this and my own vehicle enthusiast site only show the bad things, you never hear the 1000's with no issues say "all is OK", only when people need help... so I am just testing everything to make sure it works, and so far all seems OK... fingers crossed...

 

need not to worry my friend, so far the creators update was the smoothest update i've been through. i had a rough time on anniversary update, bsod and everything. when first updating to windows creators, it was superb. the only issues that i've read around is that there's some hiccups here and there for certain games.

i just noticed that "disk defragmentation" is also not opening for me through the search windows bar. i could literally say that everyday i type this words and run the defragmentation almost 3 times a day when im bored. seems like the reset really didn't do it properly. i'm just gonna take it slow. taking fast decision would usually end up giving me 2 more issues to deal with after fixing 1.

 

Funny enough I have just looked at the "disk defragmentation" setting, typed "defrag" and again mine appeared... will be running it later today as it stated my drive is 9% defragmented....
