Notepad won't accept ASCII characters when typed in

Hello everybody: whenever I try to enter an ASCII character when typing in Notepad, the character simply won't appear, for example, if I type "Alt+165" in order to place a "Ñ", or if I type "Alt+130" in order to place an "é", those characters won't appear in the text and Notepad would act as if I just didn't type anything at all. I have both my physical and Windows' keyboards correctly configured and can use them perfectly in each and every program installed on my PC, Notepad is the only software that won't accept ASCII codes when typed. What could be the problem? Thank you very much in advanc

    :)

  2. Ascii file in Notepad

    Hi GreenGreen2,

This statement of an issue is quite unclear and incomplete to be understood by our readers. It is too broad for us to distinguish the main reason why you are having challenges/concerns with
Notepad. To have a better understanding of your concerns, we'd like to ask you some questions:

    • What is this file? Is it a Notepad
file with ASCII characters inside it? or is file with ASCII characters named on it?
    • What is the file extension of this file? Is this a .txt file or not?
    • Where is this file came from?
    • Can you give us a step by step walkthrough on what you’re doing?
    • Can you create a new user profile and test if the issue will still happen in the new user profile?
    • What were the recent changes made on your part before you experienced this issue?
    • Can we have a screenshot of this file? This is to give us at least an idea what type of file is this.

In addition, you can read our forum guidelines here:

  3. Can't enter multiple Ascii characters in Notepad

    Lenovo Legion laptop

    Windows 11

    English language settings

    Swedish keyboard settings

Now, the issue is that whenever I open a new .txt file in notepad I can enter a total of 1 Ascii character using the left-alt + numpad method. Attempting to enter a second character using the same method results in an unknown character box, after which the document stops accepting left-alt + numpad inputs altogether. Closing and reopening the file resolves the issue for one input, after which it breaks again.

Ascii input works as normal in other programs, e g ╩═╧╬.

    What gives?

  4. Notepad won't accept ASCII characters when typed in

Extended ASCII characters from USB-serial interfaced equipment not displaying correctly.

    Hi,

Extended ASCII characters are very useful for typing special symbols or characters. For better assistance, we would like to clarify the following:

    • Have you tried using the extended ASCII characters on an application such as notepad, Word, etc.? If yes, does it work on the said applications?
    • Are there any error messages displayed when using the extended ASCII characters on your external serial device?

We're looking forward to your reply.
