    NTFS Access Problems

    Good Evening Microsoft Community,

I have a very bad problem with a or better two windows installations and it's NTFS permissions..

First I am gonna provide you with all the info and problems I face:

    The story:
My dad's pc was very slow on windows 7 on an HDD and so I thought I'd install him a fresh and clean win10 installation on a brand new 512GB SSD..
I unplugged the old HDD and installed win10 on the SSD by using a Bootstick created with MediaCreationTool.
Up to this point, everything looked very good and windows 10 booted perfectly and it does so every time.
Now I booted again and replugged the old HDD because he wanted to access the data on the old drive while using his new installation.

And here comes the big problem..:
He had no access on his C Drive SSD, Win10 and also no access on his D Drive HDD, Win7 up to the point where he has problems starting programs, writing data in specific directories and altering specific files.
I cannot say whether or not there is any distinct pattern in the data he cant access but there are multiple.

    Things I checked myself:
    1. If you boot from the HDD win7 you have the same issues.
    2. The account on win10 is an administrator
    3. If you unplug the HDD and boot Windows 10, you have the same issues.

    4. I tried altering the owner of the whole C: and D: Drive to [ICODE]PCNAME/Administrator[/ICODE] and have the same issues.
--- When I try this, I get a error message for all the files I cant alter the permission on:

This is not a screenshot of the PC i talk about, because you probably wouldnt understand the language but it has the exact meaning

So yes, I tried this "workaround" of changing the owner from TrustedInstaller to PCNAME/Administrator of the drive and the problem persists.

At this point, I have no clue what to do next and I am pleased to hear your opinions.

    Thanks, John

    :)

  2. xp ntfs permissions erased - help!

NEVER, ever, remove FULL CONTROL permissions in the Access Control Lists/rights priveleges from:

    • Administators Group
    • YOUR local Administrator User
    • SYSTEM
on NTFS rights on your disks (via Explorer.exe rightclick properties menu, security tab) that use that filesystem, OR in the REGISTRY either, via rightclick on HIVES/KEYS permissions popup menu options...

(Sure way to lock yourself out, period, & I have done it myself early on w/ NTFS filesystems &/or the Registry before... only way to learn sometimes, is making mistakes!)

    * Keep this in mind, those of you that start experimenting w/ security @ these 2 levels!

    APK

P.S.=> Leaving them @ FULL POWER, in both areas, usually 9/10 times allows you to get back into your rig (logging on as your LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR USER, to fix it), & make alterations to rights/acl's as needed, to "get it right", eventually... especially when you're still learning/experimenting! apk

Quick Access not searching Pictures folder

Summary, that last suggestion didn't work.

    • I moved the pictures to another folder temporarily.

    • Since there were no troubleshooting steps for this scenario, just for the heck of it, I ran through the restore steps. Copied some pictures into the Pictures folder, ran a Quick Access search and initial problem remains: Searching all of QA doesn't find any files in Pictures folder, running search on just the Pictures folder does. I want to run a global search and find matching files in any/all of the Documents, Music, Videos, and Pictures folders.
That article dates from 2015 and I'm guessing is out of date. I hope it didn't create potential future problems in my registry.

Bottom line: I'm still looking for a fix.

    NTFS Access Problems

    Accessing NTFS SD with N86

My N86 can't access the SD card when it is formatted using NTFS.

Is it possible to access an SD card that is formatted using NTFS? If so, how?

    Thanks!
