  1. Number of svchost.exe running

In Process Explorer I see 70 (yes seventy) instances of svchost.exe running.
some have threads (like ipoint.exe, itype.exe,..) which is OK, but most are not threaded.
The system poses no problem and works fine (CPU use is zero)
Is there a reason for that large number of svchost.exe instances and what causes it?
Can or should anything be done?
    thanks for any answer,
    gabriël

    :)

80+ instances of svchost.exe running. Virus?

Windows 10 Creators Edition runs 70+ versions of svchost.exe, so it is not a virus, it is actually normal!

Previous iterations of Windows 10 ran 15 - 30 instances of svchost.exe, so that is probably where they are getting that number . . .

I currently have 72 instances running on my system

    windows store svchost.exe

    Hi Enoch,

Downloading a program or an application would cause the Background Intelligence Transfer Service (BITS) to run. This process will require the usage of the svchost.exe to run as well. You may be able to stop the svchost.exe from running, but doing so may
initiate more errors on your Windows 10 computer. Svchost.exe is a process that hosts multiple Windows services, and allows certain number of services to share a process that should result to better system performance.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

    Number of svchost.exe running

The svchost.exe files are executables that are running Services within them.

There are many YouTube videos that have people's suggestions on which Services to disable that are most likely not used by you. Disabling many Services should decrease the quantity of svchosts that are open. Here's a good video on which ones you could disable:
What Windows 10 Services Can I Disable - YouTube

But do keep note! Before disabling Services, write down all the ones that you are changing from:
    • Automatic to Disabled, and
    • Manual to Disabled
    Just in case!

No they really aren't. You need to know the difference between "executables", "files" and "services". Try reading the link above.

These links are rubbish. None of it is true - and has nothing to do with the question in any case.

By all means disable a service (whether you know what it is for or not doesn't matter). Most likely you'll just break something apparently unconnected further down the line (as they aren't properly documented by MS) to save 0% CPU as it wasn't doing anything anyway.

What is interesting is Server editions of Windows still don't split out these things - probably as you'd expect a server administrator to monitor things more (or perhaps memory is more important than on a client). It is an interesting difference anyway.
