Windows 10: NumLock not working after CTRL button got wet on external keyboard

Using an external keyboard, my CTRL button got wet and it threw two of my laptops for a loop. Basically I could not do anything - imagine constantly pressing CTRL + every other key and mouse function, and you can surmise the user experience. I disconnected that external keyboard and most issues resolved, however now on one laptop the NumLock and right-side number pad do not work. I think some setting got tripped up by the CTRL and perhaps a peripheral key getting wet. I tried adjusting "Ease of Access" under settings but it did not help. Computer specs:Edition Windows 11 Home Version 23H2 I

numlock isn't working

Hi Somu,

I realize that the numlock is not working on the PC. I will try to help you with this issue.

Close all open windows and restart the computer once to check if that helps with the numlock. Suggest you to plug in an external keyboard to check if that helps you in this issue.

Press and hold the Num Lock key until a beep sounds.
The keypad should now work.

Suggest you to use the onscreen keyboard to check if that helps. To open the OSK from the sign-in screen, select the Ease of Access button in the lower-right corner of the sign-in screen, and then select On-Screen Keyboard.

Keyboard shortcuts not working from external keyboard

I use an external mechanical keyboard, connected via USB.

Recently some keyboard shortcuts stopped working, but they used to work.

• Windows + Tab
  
• Windows+ V
  
• Alt + Tab
  
• Ctrl + Alt + Del
  

Other shortcuts such as Ctrl + P still work.

Anyone have any advice on how to troubleshoot this?

This is Wil, one of the independent advisor, an expert with Windows 10 and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. I understand your concern about CTRL not working.

Windows don’t allow you to remap keys directly. All keyboards have 2 CTRL, both CTRL keys not working? Aside from pressing CTRL+V, you may use the right-click menu to perform a paste command. You can also try to use an external keyboard instead of your laptop's
keyboard.
