Windows 10: Nvidia driver problem with 940 MX on Windows 10 x64

My laptop is Asus A456UQ with GeForce 940MX and Win 10 x64

I have a problem with the nvidia driver: As long as I use the OEM driver from Asus website, everything works fine. The only problem is that some games won't run on this OEM driver. (ver 359.23)
After updating it to any newer version, everything seemed ok at first. All games ran perfectly well. The issue appeared after shutting my system down.

The nvidia control panel then couldn't be accessed. The message "Nvidia display setings are not available. You are not currently using a display attached to an nvidia GPU" appeared.

Strangely enough, my friends that have the same GeForce 940MX on Win 10 x64 don't experience this issue.

I have tried suggestions from all other websites:
- updating it to the latest version using clean install
- uninstalling the previous version using DDU in safe mode(lots of people recommended this)
- re-install my windows 10 (I seriously did this TWICE)

none of the above helped.

I have tried with 38x.xx and 39x.xx driver versions. Same result. The driver version I currently have for 940MX is 390.77 - Release Date: Mon Jan 29, 2018.

So everytime I install any other driver version, it worked fine at first, until I shut down my laptop. If I want to play those games, I have to reinstall the latest driver again. However, I noticed that the driver version is STILL listed on the Program and Feature. So basically it is still there, but somehow windows can't make a connection to the GPU.
It seems like updating to the latest version also removes the files needed to keep the nvidia control panel. I don't think this issue is nvidia-related, since my friends don't have this issue.

One more thing: no issues with my Intel Graphic driver. I use the latest driver and everything is fine.
Any ideas to fix this weird nvidia issue? Thanks in advance.

External Display trouble

I have Intel UHD Graphics 620 and NVidia gforce 940 MX. Its looks like intel problem but it claims the latest driver and roll back is grayed out.

 

Nvidia display is not working

I have just bought a HP Pavilion Laptop (15cc 100TX) laptop with Nvidia GEForce 940 MX graphic card.

I m founding the issue the Nvidia display setting are not available. Please guide me how this settings get enabled.

Do you have both your Intel and nvidia gpu’s enabled in Device Manager? Most laptops require this for the external card to work.

 

Thanks for your response. Under display adapters, I can see Intel(R) HD Graphics and NVIDIA Geforce 940 MX So, I guess both are enabled, no ?

Please make a restore point and then perform the following steps to completely remove the older driver and install the new driver. If it still does not work then we can troubleshoot.

Display Driver Uninstall Utility

Important: Pay attention to the warnings DDU gives you. If you end up hosing your system somehow, you're on your own -- They are not responsible for your goofs and will not help you fix it. Honestly this shouldn't ever be an issue but some of you folks run on pretty janky setups.

• Download the latest version of Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU for short)
• Download the latest driver package from your GPU manufacturer.

NVIDIA
(Change options as needed).

• Extract DDU and Run Display Driver Uninstaller.exe.
• Follow the prompts to reboot into Safe Mode.
• Once in Safe Mode, DDU will launch itself automatically and you can begin the driver removal process
• Select the appropriate driver type
• click the "Clean and restart" button
• After DDU is finished and you're back in normal Windows, things probably look pretty crappy! Install the GPU driver package you downloaded earlier.
• Once the driver installation process is complete, reboot one last time.

Now you can test to see if the issue you were experiencing has been resolved.

I believe as stated in my original post, I have done that process (using DDU). More like a few times. Yep, the issue remains.

I have tried to reproduce the issue in a more specific manner. So, it seems that if I restart / shut down my laptop on the same day, the issue doesn't appear. (so my other driver version apat from 359.23 still works properly) The issue appears when I shut down my system, then turn it back on the next day. So, is there any windows feature that gets refreshed every day ? I don't have software like DeepFreeze, in case you are wondering.

 

Sadly, no. Same as before, the status still says "working properly" even when the windows cant access my Nvidia GPU.

 

Is this still the issue then with the version you have installed?
I recommend trying a clean boot and see if the problem continues or not
