    Windows using basic display driver

    Hi,

I use Nvidia's Geforce Experience software for my drivers, they are up to date. When rebooting my pc, dxdiag says it is using the basic display driver, despite me having the latest drivers installed in geforce experience. The only way I can fix this is by
uninstalling nvidia's drivers in the control panel, restarting my pc, then reinstalling the drivers using geforce experience.

  3. Windows 10 photo viewer slow to open

This was the problem the entire time for me. Turning off the In-Game Overlay made Windows Photo Viewer go from 10+ seconds per photo to instantly working. I was unable to pull up the NVIDIA Control Panel from within Windows 10 Control Panel at first, so
I installed the latest version of the NVIDIA driver (including the GeForce Experience feature) and the option to turn off the In-Game Overlay was located under the General tab within GeForce Experience.

Nightmare, but I managed to fix things on my computer.

    First I stopped Microsoft updates.
Then uninstalled every NVIDIA program/driver/utility I could find and (IMPORTANT) deleted the install folders!

To stop Windows 10 updates do this...

Open the start menu and type "Advanced"
Select the second result, "View Advanced System Settings"
In the "System Properties" window that just opened, select the hardware tab
Click the "Device Installation Settings" button
Select "No, let me choose what to do"
Select the "Never install driver software from Windows Update"

To boot into safe mode do this...

Type msconfig and open the System Configuration utility.
Click "Boot" and check the "Safe Boot" option.

Next time you boot into Windows 10 it will be in 'Safe Mode.'
    Install the following driver...

    353.49-desktop-win10-64bit-international.hf.exe

Do NOT install the GForce Experience and do not update the graphics driver to the newer version.

I dunno if this will work for you, but it sorted out my problems.
Incredibly, even after I had disabled Windows updates the crafty twat STILL downloaded an NVIDIA driver.
Now I get pop up alerts from the task bar whining that it can't do the update!

Microsoft... Inching it's way slowly into the past! *Smile

  6. This is just a comment about the missing nVidia control panel. Mine was missing after a clean reinstall of a newer update version of Win10 64. Couldn't find anything from Googling for a control panel download (after hitting Lenovo and MS first). Finally went all over the nVidia site, no reference there so gave in and started an nVidia chat. Its a hit or miss proposition with them, if you hit well, you might get a smart tech and be done in 15 minutes, if not, you are in the hell zone of tech-chat. It turns out there is no download of a 'Control Panel' item. what he said was you have to update your drivers to their newest and then right click on your desktop and it will appear in the menu. Only if you are up to date after a fresh OS re-install. I know it will remain even if the drivers become out of date, but not the other way around. So simple, and not to be found in writing anywhere. I spent about 5 hrs trying.
