Windows 10: Oct 17 Creators Fall update

Thanks Bree. My Defer Update was Not Configured. I changed it to disabled and checked for updates. Low and behold, It got the 1703 update. Should I change it back to not configured or leave it to disable or enabled? I never have changed it before. Thanks again Bree, It's been a long time.

 

That would be gpedit you are talking about. For my tests I just used the 'defer' setting in Settings > Update & security > Windows update > Advanced options. I didn't touch gpedit, so it would still have been set to 'not configured' while I was testing.

In general, 'not configured' is the more appropriate option in gpedit. The 'not configured' option means there's no group policy one way or the other. You may see a red 'some settings are managed by your organisation' message appear in a Settings page if you use 'enabled' or 'disabled'. Just setting a group policy counts as 'management by your organisation', even if its effects are to give the user full control.

I suspect you may have turned on 'defer' in Settings a while back and forgotten about it, that's why you hadn't been finding 1703 and disabling it with gpedit let you find it at last. I would set gpedit back to 'not configured' and check your Windows update's advanced options.

 

I'm not holding my breath for this one, to be honest. Windows 10 is getting more and more ridiculous in what it adds to the plate. I still love it more than any alternative (I mean, at least it's not as pathetic in terms of default programs as Mac and has a spellchecker in Word, which is somehow still a novelty to some), but seriously, this update looks like painting over a crumbling wall. When your system features include "unofficial" file conversion and support for new version of programs with the functionality of other programs like VLC, this is seriously sad.
