October 2016 Cumulative Update Changed Settings

Windows 10 Pro x64 laptop had updates set to automatically download and then notify. (Still using v. 1511 build 10586 due to continuing reported issues with 1607.) No problems with any updates prior to Oct 2016.

Oct 11 cumulative update KB3192441 apparently failed and gave notice it would "automatically retry later". Download failed again on Oct 12, 13 and 14. Went to Microsoft Update Catalog and downloaded/installed KB3192441 without any apparent issues. But when I opened Settings > Update & security, I saw a brand new notice that "Some settings are managed by your organization" (see screenshot.)

    Q1: Why did this happen?

Q2: How do I regain full control over future updates since this laptop is not part of an "organization"?

NOTE: I tried modifying Windows Update settings using this tutorial. No effect on removing the "Some settings are managed by your organization" notice.

I also tried using three System Restore Points and two System Images all made prior to Oct 11. They did not have any success in removing the notice. It reappeared as soon as I clicked the "Check for updates" button.

(BTW, going thru the Microsoft Update Catalog resulted in a download of 1.03GB and took almost 6 hours to complete. I understand that MS wants people to have all released updates but this cumulative concept really stinks. End of rant.)

    :)

    My Canon MX920 Printer

    Hi Donna,

To assess the situation properly, please confirm the following:

    • Have you tried updating the printer drivers instead of reinstalling with the CD?
    • How is the printer connected to the system? (USB port, WiFi, LAN, etc)
    • Regarding the last Windows update, are you referring to the Cumulative update for Windows 10 last October 6, 2016? If so, we would like to inform you that there was another Cumulative update released last October 11, 2016. We suggest applying the latest
update as well and check for any changes.

We look forward to your reply.

Run CMD as admin and copy/paste:

    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f

Note, that it will probably appear again, it is related to some Windows Update/Insider settings.

Thank you for your response. As you suspected might happen, there was no change. The notice still appears. Also, Windows Update > Advanced options > Choose how updates are installed is now grayed out. Prior to KB3192441 I was able to access the drop down menu. Using gpedit.msc again had no effect on grayed out drop down menu. Screenshots provided.

You need to change those upgrade settings from within an Admin account - are you doing this?

  7. Then I guess you have to use all those. But it will reset many of your settings, like UAC.
You can try unlinking your Insider account before, if you have it linked.

    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f
    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsStore\WindowsUpdate" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsStore\WindowsUpdate" /f
