  1. Odd Behavior with FTP Transfers and USB File Copying

    Hello!

As the title says, my computer is doing something very funny.

Whenever I download files from an FTP site, after about 3 or 4 minutes, the transfer causes the OS to stop working. I can move my mouse but programs do not respond. If I act fast enough, I am able to click on the windows button and attempt to shut down my computer. It will close open programs but then sit at the "shutting down" blue window and spin spin spin never actually shutting down.

    I've tried:

    • reducing the file transfer items to 1 at a time which helped but it still happens.
    • reducing the speed of the transfer which, again, helps but it still freezes.
    • downloading to a different drive but it still freezes.
    • Re-seating ALL removable cables and cards (including RAM)

    Things of note:

    • I also experience the same freezing issue when transferring files from a USB stick to the system.
    • I can play heavy games like Halo for long periods with no problems. Standard usage like web browsing and watching videos (YouTube or downloaded) do not affect the system in any negative way.
    • Downloading large files using a web browser doesn't affect the system.
    • One thing that does seem to work is if I boot into safe mode with networking, it seems to download fine no matter how many concurrent downloads at the same time. I am only able to use the USB 2.0 ports in safe mode but transfers using the USB stick also work fine.
    • I suspected a failing motherboard as the network connection and USB are both onboard. I don't have a NIC or wifi card to try but I've been tempted to. I don't suspect the issue would be hardware any longer as the symptoms disappear in safe mode.

    My specs are:

    • i7 3930K (not overclocked)
    • Gigabyte X79-UD3
    • 16GB Ram
    • NVIDIA 1080 ti
    • Windows 10, fully updated (checked daily)
    • Filezilla (FTP Program. I have tried others with the same problems)
    • BeQuiet Dark Power 1200Watt Platinum PSU
    • SSD Hard drive running OS, HHD for storage, USB HHD Drive for backup

FTP file transfer not as fast as it should be

There is too much overhead with FTP, it rarely efficiently uses a direct ethernet connection.

Try using a network file transfer instead of FTP. If both computers are on the same private network, there is no reason for FTP.

FTP transfer, files not keep their original date-time

    Hello,
I managed to connect and transfer files from my PC by FTP via Win10 File-Explorer File to my Samsung Galaxy S20 mobile. It's much more convenient than connecting the mobile to the PC by usb cable..
Except that, the files transferred to the mobile does not keep the original date-time. They take the date-time of the day of the transfer.
I did the same test with Total-Commander/FTP ... Same problem.
Is it due to FTP transfer? Is there a way for the files transferred by FTP to keep their original date-time?

    I'll appreciate any help
    Regards

Odd Behavior with FTP Transfers and USB File Copying

Large Number Of Files Copying To FTP Partly Complete

When I used to use Arch Linux as my main OS, I didn't have this issue quoted above, and also I could use USB to transfer the files because the USB would stay connected - on Windows 10, even with USB Selective Suspend turned off in Power Options, the phone will not stay connected to USB when copying files.

So 2 points to Linux, 0 to W10 in that regard.

I'm copying all the files again via FTP as I couldn't find any way to only copy the files not already in destination.

The quoted issue above with copying, by the way, exists not just for transferring to phones, but any file transfers on Windows.

Also thank you for that information, Berton
