  1. Odd Issue - Any Audio Device freezes/shutdown Windows 10

To start, I have been trying to solve this issue for days now.

Event viewer tells me nothing. So it has been many hours figuring this out to even find out audio was the problem.

I have tested my hardware, swapping out PSU, hdd, sata cables, even my gpu and cpu just to be sure.

I have another working computer that is almost identical, though it has an older version of windows 10. I have tested my usb devices on it and they work fine.

    __________

    So with everything tested...

Audio is for sure causing the freezing and sudden shutdown. Whenever an audio device is turned on, the pc will freeze within 10minutes-3 hours.

It varies a lot but it seems to have no exact condition to freeze. I can do nothing, run no audio, or video, just do nothing but log in. And if I sit and wait it will shut itself off, or freeze.

I did figure out at a point in my testing that running videos and a discord call at the same time seems to force the problem to trigger. It'll freeze or shut itself off within 10 minutes or less.

This was useful in figuring out what the issue was...

Anyway when I was first testing things I was thinking it would be a display driver, my gpu... In safe mode everything functions fine. But of course, safe mode so some devices are disabled.

The odd thing here is audio can work in safe mode.

So the problem is triggered by an audio device being on.

BUT the audio device is not at fault itself.

Something else is the root cause and I am not sure what...

USB sound devices do not usually run in safe mode, but my yeti mic does. Acting as a speaker I could hear and it would not freeze with a discord call running. Which make me think it isn't my usb ports causing the issue.

    So what is the issue...?
    ____________

Now I have some things I can still test. As mentioned I have access to another computer that is almost the same build. Yet it is functioning. I can try and use the version of Windows 10 that computer is using.

I can try and copy the audio drivers.

I can see if the audio controller is the issue... really I could just try and copy all the drivers on the chance one is different and causing the issue.

The problem only triggers with audio, I can run my GPU itself as long as the audio is disabled... so the GPU functions. I have already copied the drivers the other computer was using for the GPU but the result stayed the same.

Because of what was mentioned above... copying drivers may not be a way to resolve this. It could in fact be a windows 10 update, or windows 10 version causing this. If anyone happens to have heard of this issue being created by something... would be nice to know, I hadn't noticed anything when I was searching the web.

Anyway, the other idea, is switching my hdd with the other pc's, and seeing if both hard drives will run in different towers. If the hdd for my computer runs in the other tower... that'd obviously point to a hard ware issue... but if it still freezes that means it is a Windows 10 issue.

This hdd worked fine on windows 7, and I have wiped it clean several times now and tried reinstalling windows 10 completely fresh several times. But every fresh copy had the freezing issue if audio was on.

The other tower has audio, this is a fact. It has audio and no freezing issue...

Though Working tower is Windows 10 - version: 2004 build: 19041.867

Problem tower is Windows 10 - version: 20H2 build: 19042.867
Windows feature experience pack is the same for both.

So with this being a key difference... could the issue simply be the different version and build of windows 10? Or an update to them...

Or maybe this issue can be resolved some other way.

I can try those things out I mentioned and plan to. Though on the off chance anyone else has some input on this matter. Or maybe wants to see where this goes if you are struggling yourself... then figured to post about it.

  2. Audio device issue

    Hi Venu,

Incompatible audio device drivers are known to operate against the method that Windows 10 follows. First, uninstall the audio driver, then follow these steps to resolve the issue:

    • Right-click on the name of your PC at the top of the list of devices in
      Device Manager
      .
    • Select Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the device driver, or download and install the latest version from the manufacturer’s website.

Let us know how it goes.

Odd Issue - Any Audio Device freezes/shutdown Windows 10

Windows Installed An Odd Audio Driver

Despite me telling Microsoft to postpone a Windows update, it disregarded my instructions, installed one anyway and has another scheduled to install. I suppose because they think we're just taking up space on their planet. But I digress.

I now have an audio driver that has installed itself via Microsoft for the audio speaker in my display monitor. It is listed in my playback devices as 2962 (2 - NVIDIA High Definition Audio). I could just disable it but unless there's something else going on that may cause problems I'm unaware of, I wouldn't mind in so much if I could just rename it. Several photos attached.

    Suggestions?

    Windows 10 64
