Windows 10: Odd thing happening with my audio. How can I fix it?

All audio through the headset is heard by other people like in calls and such but not on the mic. Hear this device is not enabled.When I speak into the mic it's rather quiet but not a big problem to other people.I'm not sure if this means anything butThe output device is listed as speakers, I have the two wires plugged into the back panel red to red, green to green. It isn't fixed when plugging it to the front.

Audio disappeared - got it back but now have odd mkv problem

Hi. While working at my Windows 10 PC yesterday, I realised there was no sound. My media players gave video only and Avidemux gave a warning “Trouble Initializing Audio Device”. All the obvious checks suggested that there was no problem, drivers were up to date etc.

I went to the sound icon in the system tray and clicked 'Troubleshoot sound problems' which told me it had fixed something but didn't say what. I now have my sound back but with some new issues:

my WMP no longer plays mkv files

my mkv files no longer show a 'thumbnail', just the logo of whichever media player is set to play them.

Can anyone suggest what on Earth happened yesterday? Many thanks.

UPDATE: I've found one or two mkv files that DO work with WMP and show thumbnails(!!). But the vast majority of my mkv's have the highlighted problem. All very odd...

A few days ago, I did a /sfc scannow and it found corrupt files, but was unable to fix them. Last night I did the DISM as you suggested and it found nothing. Should I go ahead and run the second DISM command?

As to updating my graphics driver, I currently have the latest version (after doing the steps provided).

Windows Installed An Odd Audio Driver

Despite me telling Microsoft to postpone a Windows update, it disregarded my instructions, installed one anyway and has another scheduled to install. I suppose because they think we're just taking up space on their planet. But I digress.

I now have an audio driver that has installed itself via Microsoft for the audio speaker in my display monitor. It is listed in my playback devices as 2962 (2 - NVIDIA High Definition Audio). I could just disable it but unless there's something else going on that may cause problems I'm unaware of, I wouldn't mind in so much if I could just rename it. Several photos attached.

Suggestions?
