Windows 10: Office no longer launches the Desktopp app

I'm not exactly sure why, but recently I've run into an issue with Microsoft Office where it isn't launching the desktop app from the Office app. I instead have to manually launch Word myself. This isn't necessarily a horrible problem, it's just a little bit inconvenient for me, and was wondering if there's a possible fix.

Office 2019

Only supported on Win10. Sorry, 8.1 users, only 4 years old, gotta go.

Last year at Ignite, we announced Office 2019 – the next perpetual version of Office that includes apps (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Skype for Business) and servers (including Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business). Today we’re pleased to share the following updates:

• Office 2019 will ship in H2 of 2018. Previews of the new apps and servers will start shipping in the second quarter of 2018.
• Office 2019 apps will be supported on:
  • Any supported Windows 10 SAC release
  • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2018
  • The next LTSC release of Windows Server
• The Office 2019 client apps will be released with Click-to-Run installation technology only. We will not provide MSI as a deployment methodology for Office 2019 clients. We will continue to provide MSI for Office Server products.

 

Apps are no longer launching

I'm running Windows 10 Desktop.

Mail, Contacts and Calendar were working fine during the week of December 7th, 2015.

I was away on business the following week. When I returned on the 18th, an update was installed for Windows 10.

Now, a number of Apps, like Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Calculator, won't launch, while others like Store, Groove Music, Maps, Weather will.

I've tried checking for updates (both system and apps) and rebooting - no luck.

I do have Office 365 - 2016 installed, but the other apps were working fine before last week, so I don't believe it's a conflict.

Additionally, it seems to affect non-Office apps like Microsoft Solitaire Collection, Candy Crush and who knows what else - I haven't checked them all

Any suggestions?

Suggest you to run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter by following the steps below:

• Type “Troubleshooting” in search bar and press Enter.
• Click on “View All” on top left pane.
• Select “Windows Store Apps” from the list and follow the prompts for troubleshooting.
