I hated and I mean hated Windows 8 and 8.1 with a pure passion. Told people it was the biggest mistake since
    Millennium.

And now a few days on Windows 10 and fixing a few bugs, I like it.

    Why?
    Out of the box feel.

While 10 still keeps the ugliest OS look on the planet alive ( Flat Design Crap )

it has a feel to it not unlike 7 ( the best OS MS put out to date ), a lot of the functions I use in 7 are there in 10 ( apparently it was there in 8/8.1 too but hidden? )

I like, no love the start button. It was the biggest mistake to remove it, things would of gone better for MS if 8 had this at least.

I'm already customizing my OS experience

With 8 it feels like you trying to make my laptop a tablet. My laptop is not a tablet, it does not have a touch screen. We have large touch screen PC's at work and never use the touch screen for working with our documents.

We have bought at least 20 new computers in the past year all with windows 8, everybody and I mean everybody Hates 8. Constantly there are requests to put windows 7 ( back) on these computers.

Several people at work bought Macs when they needed new laptops to avoid using 8.

If Microsoft can continue to hurry up and develop 10 into a full new OS then it may save not only MS but PCs

Honestly I like 10 enough that with a few more nice features I feel it will be great.

    But it needs more work.

So my point: Out of the box feel, people need to be able to walk up to the computer and be able to USE IT!

Mac, I have used on occasion and it sometimes frustrates me ( most apple programing does and I have Iphone and Ipads) Apple at least understands that Usability is Number one, something MS seems to have forgotten with Win 8

But windows 8 I would go up to and spent minutes trying to do something that would take me seconds with windows 7. Whats worse I always feel like I cannot find anything on windows 8.
Windows 10 preview already feels more organized and I can find most of what I need fast, after tweaking I can find it all and all the time. and it feel comfortable.

There was a lot of Buzz with tech writers that the 8 haters needed to embrace change, but you see change is not the issue, usability and comfort are the issues and 8 missed the mark on that by a mile.

If 10 continues on this current road then the mile will be lessened by a lot and people will start to like the PC again.

These are my experiences and thought with just about 5 days everyday use of 10 preview.

    Bill

I hated Windows 8, and Windows 10 is worse

If you want to use a Linux Distro the Best two are XUbuntu and Kubuntu. I have each one on my 2 spare PC's. Trouble free !! And also FREE !! Programs like Firefox, Google Chrome, Google Earth, Mozilla Thunderbird (Email) etc. available also Libre
Office (a Microsoft Word replacement) all for free. A lot of these come with the Linux Distro.

  3. Down grade

Just bought a Computer and it had 8.1 (Not pro) on it. Hated it. Upgraded to Windows 10 and it's only a little better than 8.1. I have a windows 7 disk and a spare hard drive. Before I open up the computer and replace the hard drive, is there a download
to completely delete 8.1 and 10? Had 7 on my old computer and loved it. Some may like Windows 8 and 10, but not for me.

OK I hated windows 8/8.1 but I like 10 why?

Rather than let folks hate Windows 8 why didn't you simply add Classic Shell and perhaps Modern Mix? That basically makes it into Windows 7 or a less capable version of Windows 10. And one can completely forget about the Modern Interface. Yes a few control panel type features are a little different than Windows 7 but that's true in Windows 10 to as it is clearly built on Windows 8.

  6. I know at least one person who did this.

He had a spectacular $4K W7 laptop, which he replaced with a MacBook (I assume it was the "top of the range" version)

    Agreed.

    Agreed.

    Not all changes are good.
People will generally accept good (in their personal opinion) changes.

Yeah, the IT guy will not let me do it ( I'm a physician and have some say but not enough to put Classic shell on those computers ) Luckily we use a network with server 2008 on it so it works for now

By the way even my wife ( A staples Easy Tech lol more on that later ) hates 8 on her touchscreen, she says its a lot of trouble with the start screen looking for apps and programs. So tonight she now has the 10 preview and already loves it, now she may stop using her ipad for everything and start using the PC again for some things.

    Hi there

typically works PC's are locked down and users can't add their own software which could make the PC's easier to use.

There's two schools of thought now in providing I.T services for the masses -- a Decent VDI and BYOD or a "classical I.T infrastructure" with locked down PC's etc.

Both have merits and de-merits -- up to the organisation concerned.

The BYOD approach IMO is the one the USERS like - especially if they can use their own MACS at work for example -- Windows runs on Macs easily enough - and with a network VDI you don't even need to install Windows as a VM on the laptop.

I use my own SP3 with this system -- it means I can have things like Office in various Languages too.

Apart from the start button there really is MINIMAL difference in the use between 8.1 and W10 if you set it to boot straight to the desktop. Maybe those businesses that have migrated to W8 haven't done this on their company PC's.

    Cheers

Thanks for the good explanation of the situation. I haven't been in the every-day-in-the-office workforce for 15 years. I do know that even without Classic Shell you can configure Windows 8 to be very convenient for desktop operation. One click or key tap and you are on the desktop with convenient shortcuts and the task bar. The start screen can be organized with all your favorite desktop programs. Its not Windows 7 but its very easy to use.

The biggest reason why you probably like Win 10 is because it boot up on desktop when you first fire it up and not on start screen. But basically, 10 is still 8 with built-in Microsoft version of Classic Shell and Pokki app combined together.

I love, I mean love Windows 8.1 with a pure passion. I tell people everywhere that it's the greatest OS released to date. Even better than 7. *Wink

It looks as though 33% of members here agree. https://www.tenforums.com/general-dis...n-windows.html A much better system overall IMO once one learns it, although 8.1 is indeed better than 8.

Once I organized my superb Modern-looking Start Screen the way I like it with personally titled columns there is simply no problem finding anything. With much quicker efficiency I may add. Live tiles give me information that dead icons or Start Menu simply cannot. Search is much better with categories. If I install an app it's there for me marked as new to be easily found and place on my Start Screen whenever I so choose to put it. Much better than digging into a small cascading Start Menu.

Charms, once learned, is another great feature they added. Too much to post on that to explain it.

Start Screen including titled columns, settings, Store apps, and favorites all automatically installed in the next OS I Install via MS services to boot. What could be better than that? Right out of the box. *Wink

Windows 10 looks to be 8.1 with a Start Menu which is nothing but a miniaturized combination of Start Screen and Apps Screen. The other change is that Store apps now open on the desktop with better snapping. Using the combination of Win32 and Store apps still remains. The added virtual desktops looks to be a great added feature.

Looks like I may be leaving one love for another soon. That's if I'm able to boot to the Start Screen and not the cumbersome miniature Start Menu. Didn't know how much I "disliked" it until the Start Screen was introduced. I used to plaster dead icons in an organized manner on my desktop, well, much like a Start Screen so I didn't have to dig into the menu. Windows key > Right arrow > Enter was about all I used it for. *Wink

I'm with HG. I love Window 8 and 8.1! It is the best OS yet! However, I haven't touched my Windows 8.1 in weeks. I really am liking Windows 10. *Smile

HG, I don't know if you can boot to the start screen, but you can replace the start menu with the start screen *Smile
