Yes and thanks, Chuck. I know that one can configure it that way. I did try that for a bit, but configured back to the Start Menu to really learn it before reverting back. Mainly to help others some day upon RTM. Another thing I noticed is that it messed up my 8.1 Start Screen because of synchronization. Lol! Whatever I changed in 10 it messed up in 8.1.

When the boot to Start Screen option isn't grayed out any longer, then I'll surely use that. That's when I get my system up and running again that is. In the mean time I'm using a 7 lappy. Man, that's old cumbersome tech!

All this really says is that you never really gave Windows 8 an objective look. You made up your mind either before you tried it (and thus trying it just reinforced your already made up decision), or you simply did not investigate it long enough to find out that you could make it do whatever you wanted to (short of those.. ahem.. fine fellows who insist that it not have any metro at all).

This is basically the Windows Mojave experiment all over again. They took people that claimed they hated Windows Vista, put a new skin on it and told them it was the next version of windows, and suddenly they loved it. Despite the fact it worked identically in every way. They even talked about how they liked various features that were "new" (yet they were in Vista). (although obviously Windows 10 does have new features and does operate slightly differently in some ways)

All it goes to show is that lots of people make up their mind about things before they've even used it, and no matter how much you try to show them, they won't change their mind... but give them a placebo and tell them it's a cure for world peace and they'll be all over it.

Yes thats the case I come across, but its Microsoft's fault too, when I fresh installed 10 it was set up for my PC not tablet style like in 8 and 8.1 much better. One of the complaints I read is "The tiles I hate the tiles" you have to remember we are tech people and see this and if we do not want we tweak. But most people using a PC are not tech people, just want to walk up sit down point and click. If you are working on documents (90% of Business use) then you do not want a touch screen for a document PC unless its just check marks type. Writing papers and working with spreadsheets and some data bases you do not want to stare at smudges on the screen from dirty finger prints. This is the part I do not understand all the tech writers and MS seeing, everyday use, PC's are found in more businesses and schools than in homes, home users are migrating tablets more, sure this makes sense, but my wife and I use our pcs for data, picture and other uses a tablet just cannot do. I expect home PC use to continue to decline some but not altogether tank, there will still be a portion of PC users who will still want a powerful platform for uses that a tablet does not do well. I like 10 so far can't wait to see whats next.

    Please you assume,

I have used windows 8 since the beginning, please do not assume I do not, I think 50 hours a week at work with windows 8 then 8.1 dealing with the difficult features ( IMO), and also have an 8 laptop at home till last night when I converted it 10, this qualifies for me to say "I Hate 8 and 8.1" 10 has not changed my mind

Repeat of why I like, "Out of the BOX Feel", you see being able to create all the shortcuts and add on programs to make windows more usable is a fail. Add ons sometimes do work right after updates and crash sometimes, Really Windows 7 user experience "Out of the Box" was fantastic, it was basically with Vista with improvements.

10 may be 8.1 under the hood but so what? Under the hood may be the most important to you and me but to most users its how easy it is to use! Why do you think people buy American "Sports Cars" that are not really sports cars but look like they are fast? People judge by looks and ease always have and always will.

  7. Other than the Start Menu and windowed Metro Apps (and OK yes a little better responsiveness), what's the big difference? I find 8.1 still more to my liking at this point, and I was one of those "I'll never run Windows 8, NEVER" types of people...lol. I think it must have been Lenka that helped sell it for me. *Wink

Yep and thats my point, Windows 10 already has some "Out of the box" features that are appealing, I do not think your wrong about 8 and 8.1 being a better OS than 7 but the UI is the problem. MS wanted a good User experience but I along with many many others did not like the start tile UI experience for a PC. In fact when its tablets I like the apple OS except I'm forced to Jailbreak it so I can tweak. One thing that these OS's can't be is all things to all people unless they are very customizable.

I Think its important that some of us here admit we hated 8 but we are liking 10, the 8 crowd should like it but with the marketing problems MS has had with 8 if you can win over the 7 and XP ( many XP users still ) then you have a Hit

Very good point, I think 10 is going to be good in winning over hold outs

Yes. Like a Start Menu. Yet it isn't anything close to the 7 Start Menu other than two columns. I guess it doesn't matter just as long as it's a Start Menu.

Sounds like a contradiction of terms. You OPed explaining that you hated it. So now you hated on a PC, but in your next sentence you don't use it on a tablet either.

But yet you go to extremes to tweak iPads???

I've been saying all along since the rumors of 10 that it will be the most customizable OS to date and it looks as though it is.

Admittedly 8.x is not the seller 7 was, but as I pointed out it's not the biggest loser if 33% of members claim that it's the best. That's really only 23% difference to the 55% say about 7. It's not like MS lost there arse on 8.x. No, they still made and are making a profit from it. Their stock continues to do well a also. It is also not only the "consumption" OS that people make it out to be. It's very much a "production" OS, if not more so than 7 is.

  12. Hi

I like it because it makes me feel like I'm using Windows 7 again!

I really wished a year ago when I bought my new computer that I had Windows 7 installed on it.
And now it feels like I have.

I've been using it for a week now without looking back. I like the desktop Start Menu with which MS raised a billion customers, snappier performance, improved Explorer functions, and better graphics rendering.

I don't care for the tablet apps in Start Menu, flat ugly GUI, and lack of gadgets - remedied by 8GadgetPack - Gadgets for Windows 8 / 8.1

  14. When 10 is eventually released I hope it is going to give a good impression to the most people

In it's current form I would not pick it over Win 8.1, I find 8.1 much easier to navigate and find things, 10 so far just seems like a awkward mess (I use the start screen instead of menu)

I just hope MS give people the option to use it how they want, working similar to the 8 series or like 7 and not just restrict operation based upon the type of machine you have (touch or mouse/keyboard)

    Hi there

I just have 2 problems with it - otherwise it's certainly the most stable OS I've had that is probably not even "Alpha" software and some way off being an RC (Release Candidate).

    1) Can't increase Text size on the start menu -- OK on a bog standard laptop with 768 X 1366 resolution - but hideous on say a Surface Pro 3 with a really great 4K resolution - or even on decent large monitors.

    2) (BIG ONE) Cannot connect W7 computers shared HDD's TO W10 unless I address the W10 computer by its IP address - not a great solution if using DHCP. Connections FROM W10 TO W7 are fine though !!!!.

W8.1 computers can connect BOTH ways so no problem. Linux servers using SMB (samba) also need L: \\ipaddress rather than the host name L: \\w10computer. W10 connects TO Linux servers without problem so it's all on the INCOMING side.

No probs with Office / photoshop .

If I run a Music server ON W10 then I run into the connection problem again - the CLIENTS on W7 / android can't access it unless the IP address is given -- hideous get around.

Some NAS stuff does work but you are accessing a NAS which is NOT a W10 system !!!.

I'm happy to run this as a VM - but until Network is fixed I won't be running as a HOST on a REAL machine yet.

    Cheers
