Old computer Windows 10, Fan out of control , no bios updates....

I have an HP p6180t that I use for an HTPC. This PC was originally labled as a Vista PC with a free upgrade to W7 and then W10 came along and I went with that.

The bios is American Megatrends, v2.61 revision 5.09. Motherboard is HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Motherboard Specifications, IPIEL-LA3 (Eureka3) | HP® Customer Support

HP does not support this computer for W10 nor provide any drivers. Their driver detection utility recognizes its not a supported OS and exits.

The CPU fan runs constantly, I tried changing performance from high performance to balanced and set fan cooling to passive. According to speccy temps look good. While I may salvage this thing soon, it still runs pretty good , has a good processor and I'd hate to trash it over a fan.

I tried installing speedfan but it cant do anything but monitor. Any suggestions? I would like to find a later bios version however, I think if I go from 5.09 to 6.xx I may have issues (based on a random post I found on a similar machine)

    :)

  2. What is "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION"?

    Hi,

I recently learned that this problem arises when a hardware in the computer (Or a hardware connected to the computer) does not respond. The reasons maybe as follows,

    (1) The hardware component is old.

    (2) The hardware driver is outdated.

    (3) The BIOS of the computer is old or outdated.

    (4) The hardware component has malfunctioned.

The problem can be solved by updating Windows, updating the hardware drivers and BIOS, removing or replacing malfunctioning hardware components, and detaching unused and unwanted hardware components (Like cooling fans, mobile devices connected for charging
    only ;etc)

I experienced this problem because I connected a cooling fan to my PC, via USB (For powering the fan). When Windows couldn't get response from the cooling fan, it ended up showing the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) (Thinking that something in the PC is malfunctioning).

If you are experiencing the same problem like mine, just unplug the cooling fan and force restart the computer (That is, by press and holding the Power Button until the computer switches off and then pressing the Power Button again to switch it back on.).

  3. Windows 10 upgrade very slow out of sleep: 7 minutes

You should check out the following thread from persons who had similar issues.

Windows 10 slow response or performance after waking up from sleep mode

    - Some had their issue resolved after updating the BIOS.

    - Reinstall Windows 10 using Reset.

    - Disable any Fan Control software

    - Update chipset drivers if any are available.

Old computer Windows 10, Fan out of control , no bios updates....

I came across the fan problem on an older computer the other day and cured it by opening the computer and blowing out the dust accumulation in the finned heatsink between the fan and the CPU, fan didn't have to work so hard providing cooling.

I cleaned out the fan, used a spray duster on the inside of the computer. The bios has no fan options. The case fan goes all the time too in addition to the cpu fan. I even pulled out the pci graphics card to see if that would help but it didnt
