    Old Hard Drive shows “No Media”


    I replaced the 3 tb HDD with a 1 tb SSD in our HP Envy desktop. It runs like a dream now. I had hopes of using the 3 tb HDD for extra storage, but after freezing during reformatting, it now has “no media” in device manager.

    Any suggestions for how to fix this? I don’t have anything on the drive that I care about, but I hate to “waste” the drive.

    media drive uk

    a media drive is an external hdd that has software on it enabling you to just plug it into your tv and watch videos/play music etc

    i would suggest ebay for that sort of money tbh

    Hi Lori,

    Thank you for posting back.

    • How are you connecting the Hard drive to your computer?
    • Have you tried connecting the hard drive to a different computer and check if it works?

    It's possible that your USB drivers are corrupt. I suggest you to try the following steps and check.

    • Press Windows Key +R and type
      devmgmt.msc       to open Device manager.
    • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers
      at the left bottom.
    • Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click on
      Uninstall to remove it.
    • Repeat these steps for the entire USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    • Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.

    Hi John,

    We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
    • Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.
    The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.
