Windows 10: Older Lenovo Laptops & Other ATI Radeon Graphics Adapters [SOLVED]

I had no problems upgrading my older Lenovo (IBM) T60 Laptop
However it replaced the video driver with the Microsoft Basic Display Driver.
The Laptop was functional however it would not play videos beyond the lowest definitions

AMD note with respect to Radeon Display Adapters:

However this is NOT true per your only options!

Go ahead & do the upgrade to Windows 10 - it WILL install the Micrsoft Basic Display Adapter.
Indeed there is no Windows 10 Driver - however there IS a Windows 7 Driver and it works just fine!

You need to get the driver from the Microsoft Update Catalog - note that you will have to use Internet Explorer and open/Run it as Administrator (will not work with other browsers, not even Edge)
Once you get the CAB, extract it to a folder (I used 7-zip);
then open the Device Manger and select the Display Adapter & "Update Driver"
Point the selection from 'Have Disk' to the unpacked CAB folder and include sub-folders, click 'next', then select the appropriate driver for your display adapter .
In my case it found x1300 (I had expected x1400) but installed that anyway and now graphics work perfectly, even for 1080 videos.

For me the driver installed from the unpacked CAB - if it does not work, try the following:

I did not need those additional steps - when I unpacked the CAB using 7-zip, the B_72690 folder was already present and I was able to load it directly without having to run in Safe Mode.

Also note that I did not install Catalyst - just the driver.

Windows 10 install has failed - How to recover

MIcrosoft did finally ring me and were reasonably helpful in that they looked to see if they could find a new device driver for my laptop. However they failed and told me to talk to HP, who in turn could not help. I then turned to AMD who basically told
me that the would not support my driver anymore. So there you are Windows 10 is not supported on my laptop. A very poor ending given that Microsoft stated my machine was ready for the update.

I'm back on W7 Pro.

Of course Windows could fix the driver issue themselves?

Microsoft Basic Display Driver

If Microsoft Windows 10 detects the graphics adapter installed does not meet the WDDM requirement, then Windows will install the Microsoft Basic Display

Driver for the device.

Microsoft Basic Display Driver is used by Windows in the absence of proprietary drivers such as AMD Catalyst Driver.

Microsoft Basic Display Driver enables the graphics adapter to render video in basic display modes (low resolutions and color depth) and only on a single

monitor. As a result the following display functionalities are not supported:

• Multiple displays

• Display rotation

• Video capture

• Power settings

• VSync control

• Brightness control on integrated display panels

• Etc...

Options

If your graphics adapter is based on an AMD Radeon™ HD 4000 Series or older, you may consider these options:

1) Upgrade to an AMD graphics card on the Windows 10 supported products list:

• AMD Radeon™ R9 Series graphics

• AMD Radeon™ R7 Series graphics

• AMD Radeon™ R5 240 graphics

• AMD Radeon™ HD 8000 Series graphics for OEM systems (HD 8570 and up)

• AMD Radeon™ HD 8000M Series graphics for notebooks

• AMD Radeon™ HD 7000 Series graphics (HD 7730 and up)

• AMD Radeon™ HD 7000M Series graphics for notebooks (HD 7730M and up)

• AMD A4-7000 Series, A6-7000 Series, A8-7000 Series, A10-7000 Series APUs

• AMD A6 PRO-7000 Series, A8 PRO-7000 Series, A10 PRO-7000 Series APUs

Make sure that your system meets requirements of the graphics card you wish to upgrade. This includes:

• Motherboard with PCIe x16 graphics slot

• PSU with sufficient power for the graphics card and other system components

• Compatible display connections

2) Continue using the existing operating system.

After Upgrading to Windows 10 I noticed a drop in performance and that my display has changed and I'm unable to fix it.

Graphic isn't an option. i have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series under display adapters
