Windows 10: Older Toshiba USB External Hard Drive won't show up when searching for it...

Normally a driver will installl automatically for these portable hard drives when the USB cable is connected. Howerver, I have an older portable Toshiba HDD that I am trying to view files on and I'm using a Windows 10 Microsoft Surface Pro 2 to access these files. Can't find a driver on the Toshiba website and nothing shows up anywhere, what can I do to view and access these files? Thanks in advance.

External Hard Drive

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

Toshiba External USB drives not showing in Explorer or Disk Management Plug-in

The manufacturer does not list a driver for the Canvio HDTC705AL3A1 model which shows the problem. The drive was visible from an XP machine, and after this was visible once on a Win 7 Machine but is currently not visible on the Win 7 machine. There are many
driver update programs available, but the disappearance of visibility on the Win 7 machine would seem to indicate a hardware problem with the device.

The answer was:

I found the problem to be with the controller that Toshiba uses on their external hard drives.




I removed the Toshiba hard drive from the casing, put it into a SeaGate casing (thus using a SeaGate controller) and it worked fine.




To my knowledge their is no software work around for a Toshiba Ext HD and W7. Take the HD out of the casing, buy a cheap eSATA to USB connector & problem solved.


Do you think this is likely to be my problem? I don't have any spare removable USB drives to try the treatment suggested
