Yes, I use that one. For shut down I've used shutdown /p
I have both shortcuts in a folder called Power and for convenience I have added it as a toolbar on the taskbar.

For completeness, I have tested the behaviour of shutdown /g which by design is supposed to restart and reopen all registered apps. The results are the same - only certain apps get reopened - the same ones as reported earlier. It seems increasingly likely that the 'bug' is that the Start power button now uses the /g form of restart and /sg for shut down.

Further investigation shows this this is by design - that of the apps themselves, not Windows. The key word above is 'registered'. An app's code has to be written to register as capable of being restarted - it is a deliberate choice made by the programmer.

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(v=vs.85).aspx

The above is the explanation for the apparent inconsistency. It's a feature of each individual app, not of Windows as such. What's new is that in FCU Windows is using that well documented feature on restart/shut down.

I don't think this is a feature. It's not happening to enough people apparently and there's no documentation anywhere stating that this is a new function in version 1709.

I'd like to think that no one would be dumb enough to include this feature into Windows either. Imagine working on a document containing confidential data and have to make a presentation, then plug your computer into a projector...

I got into the habit of always saving my work and shutting down all foreground programs before I consider shutting down or re-booting. This happened a long time ago ( in those dark days pre windows ) but is still a valid procedure today, Yes the system is now designed to do all this automagically and to recover the open apps at next reboot, but I'd just rather be sure, I also save before any print of a document just in case the print spooler &*^*&(^s up *Wink

That comment is from a thread regarding a Windows Insider build. We're on The Fall Creators Update version 1709 which is different from the build mentioned in that thread

Yes, but that was a build from before FCU. It may well be that this feature was retained in all subsequent builds.

That is the new behavior of the system from that build, so it is included in all the builds that follow that one, including obviously the build 16299.15. In fact, Jen Gentleman recently confirmed in a conversation on Twitter that this was a "feature" implemented to "make that experience more mainstream", you can read that conversation here:

In my case if I use the normal button to restart or shut down my PC, Chrome always opens all the windows and tabs I had open before turning it off or restarting it, that's why I no longer use those buttons and (as I said in this comment) I turn off or restart my PCs simply doing click on the tile that I created with those commands that I mentioned in that comment.

Make it a habit then to shut down apps before you shut down. No embarrassing projector snafus.

  12. Thanks guys.

    I was speaking hypothetically. *Redface

I did have an issue when I upgraded my W10 Pro VM to CU (it screwed up the graphics driver).
I could tell that the VM was running, but there was no display.

It was a pain to fix, I had to:
    • Find a W10 ISO
    • Boot from it
    • Open the Command Prompt
    • Use BCDedit to change the boot files
    • Boot into Safe Mode
    • Delete the driver
    • Use BCDedit to restore the boot files
    • Boot normally (fingers crossed)

At this point, that's really all one can do, but that's still a privacy risk. The purpose of shutting down a computer is to kill all tasks/documents and have them pop up again. If you want that, then use Hibernate. People can get really screwed over by this.

I think we have sufficient understanding now to mark this thread Solved. We may not like what we found, but that's another matter. *Sad

My thanks to all who have contributed.

The ability for an app to be restarted when Windows boots was first introduced in Vista.

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(v=vs.85).aspx

Only some apps can be restarted, they have to be capable of saving their data and registering their ability to do so. Wordpad can, Notepad can't, for example.

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(v=vs.85).aspx

It appears that for the Fall Creators Update Microsoft have chosen to boot this way when using Shut down or Restart from the Start Menu.

Workarounds have been found, Alt-F4 on the desktop still shuts down the old way. Shortcuts using the shutdown command can also be used. My preferred method is the shortcuts, putting them in a folder means I can have a toolbar on my taskbar for quick access.
