one of my drive seems incompatable with one of my usb plug

Hi, I was experiencing an error 0x80070079 report when i was transferring a 13GB file from my computer to a usb drive through usb3.0 with a lightning bolt next to the ss symbol. I tried to format my drive, and too failed to succeed. Then i did some experiments, first, try to transfer the same file through the same port to a different drive, the result was a success, no problem there. Then try to first format then transfer the same file to the drive previous experiencing error with another usb plug with only the ss symbol, the result was a success too, then I repluged the same drive back to the one with ss lightning bolt, the problem occurred again. So whats the deal here?? are there anyway to fix this?? is it a windows 10 problem??

    hope someone can help.
    Many thanks!!
    Keith

    Hi,

Let's isolate the issue by using the Windows USB Troubleshooter. Kindly refer to the article below:

I've encountered similar issues and even have a few USB Thumb drives with the issue. What I've determined is the USB 3.0 ports are backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices but the usually older USB 2.0 devices are not forward compatible with USB 3.0 ports. I've seen it also with a printer that would lose communication with the computer's USB 3.0 port after printing only half a page but worked fine in a USB 2.0 port. Older mice have been a problem with USB 3.0 but not with USB 2.0 on the same machine. Booting with a USB keyboard is problematic as the BIOS usually has a Legacy USB setting for it but there's no drivers for USB 3.0 until the OS has loaded and/or motherboard drivers were installed.

good to hear your side of the issue! the thing is that i double checked my problematic drive, it is indeed an USB 3 device, so that really puzzles me... and also I having been experiencing on and off drive detection issue with that usb drive, could it just simply be the drive has grown faulty??

Is the USB cable the one that came with the drive? The inside of the plugs on mine are blue as are the ports on the computers. To get the USB 3.0 speeds all parts involved have to be SS rated, for example can't use a USB 2.0 extension cable between the port and a USB 3.0 cable. All my USB 3.0 cables only fit a USB 3.0 device and have the standard USB plug for the computer end, either black or white for USB 2.0 and blue for USB 3.0.

yes, the cable came with the device. The cable has ss symbol and "B" on it.

It sounds as though the cable that doesn't work is a Thunderbolt cable. Only use that cable on devices and ports that support it.

    Standard USB symbols on connectors:

Use the correct cable for the device and the port.

I think the "B" simply refer to as B type plug. I have just tested with my another drive that made by the same company with a ss B symbol on the cable, the result was fine.

haha, I did another experiment, this time i swapped the cable, and it works fine now, must be the cable aged to faulty....

  11. Yeah and USB used to be so simple ... one plug rules them all.

I was referring to the lightning bolt next to the ss symbol - was the lightning bolt on the cable or on the machine? Just curious ..., either way, there seems to have been a mismatch (no kidding Bill *Wink)

    Glad you sorted it out.

the lightning bolt was one the machine, but it has no "arrow" at the "tail", it is more like an electricity symbol, it googled it a little bit, it said it is an usb plug that can charge you device even when the laptop is off, though mine one is a desktop, so don't know why they put the feature there.

one of my drive seems incompatable with one of my usb plug

Seems I read an advertisement recently where that particular port can do exactly that, charge a device like a cellphone even though the computer isn't running. Bear in mind that the modern Desktops, last 15 years or so, have power to the motherboard at all times unless actually unplugged from the power source. The On|Off switch only tells the motherboard to wake up.
