One Windows account causes router wi-fi to turn off

I did an in-place upgrade from Win 7 Ultimate to 10 Pro with no apparent problems...at least until my wife tried to watch Netflix on our wi-fi connected Roku.

My computer is connected to my router with an ethernet cable. There is no wi-fi adapter on my PC. When I am logged in to my Windows user account, the router (a Netgear R6300 v2 upgraded to latest firmware) drops all wi-fi devices.

I've read all the other network/wi-fi threads on Ten Forums, but none of them mention this problem. I even asked Google, and it just looked at me with one raised eye-brow, Spock-like, as if I had a rubber chicken growing out of my ears.

When I log out of my account, and the wi-fi is magically restored to normal operation.

If I log in with one of the other accounts on the machine, the wi-fi is NOT affected, and everybody in the house is happy. So, the problem only happens on MY account. I did not have the Netgear Genie software installed, so I gave that a go but it made no difference, so I removed it. I have tried various versions of the Realtex LAN driver.

When the wi-fi is "disabled" the router management console shows it as still being active, but shows no devices attached. Rebooting the router does not solve the problem. I've installed the latest Windows 10 patches.

The problem is mopefully moot, since I plan on doing a clean install of Win 10 this weekend. The in-place upgrade was strictly a quick way to make sure all my applications worked with 10. If they didn't work, I would have an option to roll-back to 7 without having to re-install all my apps.

Has anybody else had an experience similar to mine? It's frustrating as H-E-double-hockey-sticks that I cannot figure out how it's doing it, and why it only happens on MY account! *Confused

    :)

Connection unsuccessful Your phone couldn't reach the Wi-Fi network xyz

I'm Sorry, I have check our routers and found that it has nothing to do with them... What i have found is that if i shut the phone down (turn off) and turn back on, the WI-FI is detected and the connection works as per nornmal... I believe that it may be
a WI-FI diver issue in the phone and not other devices, as i have many other devices connecting to my WI-FI and this HTC Windows 8 Phone is the only one causing this issue... Windows need to check the drivers and update them...

    Thanks...

Wow, hope there is a BIG prize for the genius who solves this one! Really weird, especially as all hardware is the same. And drivers don't know anything about users.

Sorry I am no help but I would love to hear the answer. Unfortunately, we may never find out as a re-install will hopefully work fine.

No worries. I just completed a fresh (clean) install of Windows 10, and everything seems to be working just fine. I can log in to my account AND use the Roku (and other wi-fi devices) at the same time. Kids won't be thrilled that I haven't installed Steam or Minecraft yet, though.

Really weird event, though. I consider myself pretty technical. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd conservatively rate myself a solid 8. This problem really had me stumped. All the services I disabled trying to solve the problem...oh well.

The good news is, the clean install of Win 10 is running great. Even better than the in-place upgrade from Win 7. Of course, niow I've got to install all my applications again.

The bad news is 'm going to have to by Zoner Photo Studio now. It was a Giveaway Of The Day offering, and I've really grown attached to it. Since the re-install, it no longer gets a proper license. *Sad I guess the Zoner folks have earned my money.

Good news, then, re the wifi problem. I sorta knew we would never find out how that happened!

A lot of routers are designed for keeping data. It is possible to skim through these to look at address of the wireless router and the unit attempting to link. It is very useful in determining any glitches and repairing them.

In case the issue is due to failing equipment in most cases it is going to occur every now and then. Replacement can be a viable option in this case.
