After 10+yeras on mac I switched to windows and never looked back. Purchased the O365 subscription and fully jumped into Microsoft ecosystem. Perfect experience for just getting stuff done, and this whole thing, honestly, runs circles around competition.

One thing I am not happy about is OneDrive business being resource hog. I mean, I thought that OneDrive, being Microsoft product, will benefit from tight integration with Windows OS. And it does to a point – lots of really useful features, files on demand or really easy file sharing, for example,

But heck, it really can bring my machine to a crawl. I got a reasonable system, a Dell Latitude 7300 with i58365U, 16 gigs of RAM and a NVMe SSD, all the latest BIOS, drivers etc. At least once a day OneDrive tries to turn my laptop into a flying drone and make it hover on fans. Other than that it just slows the PC down and is constantly syncing. It gets really crazy, like, it takes up to 30 seconds to save a single office file in OneDrive.

I’m no IT guy but I get, in general, that syncing stuff requires comparing stuff in the cloud with files on my machine and this must be done regularly and requires some computing power. Also, I get, that all of that stuff has to be indexed, so it is searchable.

Out of my 1TB OneDrive allowance, about 80 gigs is used. Once I uploaded these 80 gigs, the files just sit there, for uploads and doownloads I am saving my usual daily work stuff, office files and such. No heavy uploads and downloads. I guess data exchange between my machine and the cloud is, most days, no more that 100-200 MBs. All my heavy folders, containing video and music are excluded from OneDrive sync.

Things with OneDrive gotten so bad that I am really considering turning off OneDrive, making all my stuff local and just make a daily backups to my external hard drive. Does anyone have any suggestions, is there a remedy to this?

  2. Windows 10 - OneDrive

Right click on the app and one of the properties has an option to not automatically start it. Uncheck, restart the computer, and it should stop. If you want to go another step further, find the OneDrive app in the start menu, right click on it and uninstall.

If that is still insufficient, there is a batch uninstaller for OneDrive available online. I can copy the code here if you need it.

Making PC desktop path native to onedrive folder?

Hi, I am using Microsoft office 365 as part of my institution package. Is it possible for the PC desktop files to natively display a folder from the onedrive? I want to make all common C: locations to onedrive locations. So if anything happens, I always have everything sync online?

Previously I synced the locations so from "C:\user\username" to other places on the PC. Previously, I use syncback to syncfolders to Onedrive and other HD's. However, this step is just redundant. When you sync onedrive to the PC, you still need to specify a place on the PC. So from "C:\user\username\ onedrive". Technically, Onedrive still uses a physical place on the PC to store files.
So what I did is that I specify which part of the onedrive to replace "My Documents", "My Pictures", "Downloads" folder in the quick access. I am having a problem specifying or replacing the Desktop folder. Is it possible to change my native desktop to display directly the desktop on the onedrive online? The only problem I see is application shortcuts. You cannot specify a shortcut to appear on the onedrive folder. Aside from that, I get full autosave function of MS files which is connected to Onedrive. If it is not possible to replace the desktop file, I will still use the same solution with syncback.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Problem with location of Pictures library after making pictures available on OneDrive

    Thanks Rhina

I did what you suggested but it ended up making OneDrive the Pictures library. This may have something to do with the way i originally moved the Pictures folders to OneDrive. I probably should explain:

Because there already was a (fairly empty) Pictures folder under OneDrive (automatically set up I think when transferring a few Ipad photos to PC via OneDrive) I had moved the top level Pictures folders into D/users/myname/OneDrive rather than moving
the Pictures folder itself. This was probably a bit stupid but I subsequently moved the top level Pictures folders into that pre-existing Pictures folder on OneDrive and that's how we got to where we are today.

To continue after that diversion. Following the restore you suggested, the pictures folder under Libraries was still wrong but it looked a lot better ie it was no longer offering me a choice of locations for Pictures folders and, instead was just showing
me all the top level folders for what it (wrongly) thought was the Pictures folder. But it was still not appearing directly under This PC.

My next step was to go into Properties option for Libraries/Pictures. Here I simply added the correct location D/users/myname/OneDrive/pictures and deleted the location D/users/myname/OneDrive which at that time was the current location.

    So, on the Positive side:

    • Libraries/Pictures now shows what I would expect ie my top level Pictures folders

    But, on the negative side:

    • Pictures still does not appear under This PC, unlike Documents, Videos, Music etc
    • in the Photos app, if I go to Folders option, it shows the folder as OneDrive, not OneDrive/Pictures even though, if i go into "choose where to look" it is correctly showing OneDrive/Pictures as the location. Obviously i can still get to the photos I need
but it's an extra unnecessary step
    That's where i am currently.
