Windows 10: OneDrive creates duplicate files when syncing PC to cloud

This has been a problem for more than a year. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. I'm using version 18.111.0603.0004 of OneDrive. I'm using Office 365, but I stay signed off. OneDrive, while syncing, will encounter merge conflicts, and without asking me, OneDrive will then copy an older version of the file from the cloud to the PC and rename the most recent version of the file on the PC by appending the computer name to the file name. This is a huge headache when launching files from shortcuts on the desktop because I'm editing an old version without knowing OneDrive has fudged my files. This has led to data loss. After OneDrive performs its updates, there are copies of both files on the PC and in the cloud. I recently uninstalled OneDrive because of a known error (OD uninstalls itself) and waited for the update. After reinstalling the update 18.111.0603.0004 yesterday, OneDrive duplicated 74 files, some Office files some text files and even Adobe Lightroom files which is an f*n nightmare. After I cleaned up that mess by manually renaming and deleting files, OneDrive did it again to 8 files. Rather than allowing OneDrive to continue its insanity, I uninstalled the program today. I make changes to files only on my PC. But I have rarely accessed files in the cloud in the past from my Android smartphone using the OneDrive app. Looking forward to a solution or fix in a future version.

Systemn Image Restore - "Duplicate" Files

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community and being a part of Windows 10.

I understand the inconvenience you are facing in restoring the backed up files on your device as duplicates are created. Do not worry we will help you with this issue.

This appears that these files are from OneDrive folder. The duplicates are created because of sync related issues. The blue sync that you see is that the file is still syncing to the OneDrive cloud.

So first, you can refer to the below article for sync related issues and check if it helps.

I suggest you to clear Upload Center cache from OneDrive and check if it helps.

Follow these steps:

• Go to Start menu and open Upload Center for Office.
• Go to Settings.
• Click on 'Delete Cached Files for Office.'
• Click OK and check if the status.

OneDrive says 235 GB in cloud but no files stored

It allows me to directly work with what is in the cloud and not worry about syncing. I have seen it suggested elsewhere and have not seen warnings. But I am quite new to OneDrive.

 

OneDrive Placeholders are coming back, now called On-Demand Sync




"At Ignite 2016, Microsoft has just announced that it is bringing Placeholders back to OneDrive on Windows 10. Now, they are not called Placeholders anymore — Microsoft is renaming the feature to “On-Demand Sync” which makes a lot more sense than “Placeholders”.

The company demoed this feature at Microsoft Ignite today, and it works just like it used to previously. As you can see in the screenshot above, the files stored in OneDrive weighed in around 9GB, but the actual size on disk was only around 3MB which is really neat. Of course, this feature isn’t anything new as it was available back in the Windows 8 days. However, Microsoft removed the feature with Windows 10, and after lots of waiting, they are finally coming back.

In case you are not familiar with OneDrive Placeholders, it’s a pretty neat feature which lets you see all of your OneDrive files on your computer — but they are not actually downloaded on your PC. When you open them, OneDrive will download the files on-demand, saving your local space which is really useful, especially if you have a PC that doesn’t have a lot of storage.

While Microsoft didn’t announce when exactly On-Demand Sync will be available to OneDrive users, we suspect it will be available with Windows 10 Redstone 2 — which is expected to arrive early next year. "
