OneDrive deleting files rather than getting new ones on Windows Restore

    Hello Microsoft Community,

I have some trouble with the technicality of how OneDrive works. So I’ve tried to restore my Windows to a previous version backup I want to restore is APR 2020 and it is currently AUG 2020 && for the sake of the example lets just say the only difference between those two months is that in AUG I have a new file called “COMPLETED.PDF” & everything else remains the same.

So before I restored everything is working good as usual. Files are being synced, everything up to date, the new file I’ve made TODAY “COMPLETED.PDF” is there on my desktop OneDrive AND confirmed to be on onedrive.com as well. So far so good.

However, post restore APR 2020 Backup, my OneDrive, instead of fetching my new file COMPLETED.PDF to update my outdated OneDrive, decides to use its current state APR 2020 as the new base.

AKA it thinks i decided to delete COMPLETED.PDF since it was there earlier, but hey its not here now so... you must’ve decided to delete it recently. When finished syncing after restore, it will say something like

11:20 AM COMPLETED.PDF has been deleted
Pre restore below, post restore above

    11:00 AM COMPLETED.PDF created

Now this makes absolutely no sense to me LOL

I am not concerned about the missing files, but rather the technicality of the issue. I have to perform a couple of restores for multiple computers for my work because of some software bug, and it would be really inconvient if OneDrive resets everyone’s work.

Anyone ever have this issue? And how did did overcome it?

    :)

Shute I never thought about system restore. But its been more than a week now, don't know if I can go back that far. But even then will it put back user files?

    Deleted file restore software.

    Oh.

So your running the backup software from the server and not the computer.

Yep I see whats happened. Just for the future (althought I am sure you wont make the same mistake again) make sure you select and option that says "if it cant find the file, DONT delete". If it doesnt have that option...switch to SynbackSE.

An FYI: difference between incremental and differential is that differential copies all new / changed files since the last full backup......incremental copies all new / changed files since the last backup no matter what it was (incremental/full/differential).

Now to get your files back:

Tried a system restore on the server?
