Windows 10: OneDrive: How can I keep my files on the cloud, but not on my PC (stop syncing)?

So I bought OneDrive to back up all my files. I want them safe on the cloud, in case something happens to my PC. I do not want them on my PC, since they clog it up. And I already have them on my PC (as I said, OneDrive is just a backup). But OneDrive always starts syncing! It starts to put the backed up files on my PC a second time. How do I stop this? Or do I somehow misunderstand what OneDrive is for?

OneDrive syncing and I can't stop it

Hi Brink - I recently renewed my Office Home 365 Personal. Previously, OneDrive worked perfectly but now it's a nightmare. It's syncing and I can't stop it - it kept at it for a week earlier & the OneDrive Support Team said it was stuck and told me how to restart it. It's working on 5,000 - odd files but my SuperAntiSpyware checks 13,000-odd.

I've tried everything to stop the blasted thing, including unlinking my PC but all that did was to stop me from opening important folders on my desktop. I thought I'd found the solution myself - I went to Settings>Accounts (which includes sync) then "sync your settings" (it's at the bottom of the list on my PC), then 'turn off sync settings'. It wasn't the solution.
I know you don't usually like to look at MS Community threads where we've already gone to but if you can, you'll see what's happened. I don't ever want Onedrive to sync with my new pc.

How do I stop syncing with Onedrive permanently? I backup everything to an external hard drive. I DO NOT want to sync to a cloud service. OneDrive seems to do this automatically on my new pc running Windows 10. I unlinked it previously. Today, it's linked
up and trying to sync again. I want this to stop.

 

OneDrive Sync

You can open up the onedrive folder on your computer and delete or move items into it, and it will sync to the server. You can also do this on the server, and it will update to the folder. That is how it works. Usually if you just refresh the folder, it should update with changes made to it. Yes, it is really a folder, and really takes up space on your computer. The location is C:\Users\[USRNAME]\OneDrive\
