OneDrive keeps restoring deleted NameSpace entries in Windows Registry

I figured out how to delete the duplicate NameSpace entry that creates a duplicate Quick Access link, however OneDrive restores that entry periodically. It doesn't happen on reboot so I'm not sure what's triggering it. Any thoughts on how to stop this?

OneDrive keeps deleting its own Explorer Namespace entry on startup

Since about a month ago OneDrive will keep deleting its own explorer namespace entry ("HKCU\Software\Classes\{018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6}" and "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6}") when the program or Windows system restart, thus removing the OneDrive desktop icon and ability to open OneDrive folder via OneDrive tray icon.

I have stopped the activity by making the abovementioned registry keys read-only, yet couldn't find an explanation about why OneDrive is acting self-destructive like this. Could it be that I also have an inactive "Business1" OneDrive registry in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive\Accounts\" that has only an ID and nothing else?

  3. Duplicated Onedrive entry

    Hi Daniele,

To resolve your concern regarding duplicated OneDrive entry, follow the steps below:

    • Search for regedit, and then press Enter.
    • Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
    • Go to SOFTWARE.
    • Click on Microsoft.
    • Select Windows.
    • Go to CurrentVersion.
    • Click on Explorer.
    • Select Desktop.
    • Click on NameSpace.
    • Check if you have several folders under NameSpace.
    • If there are several folders, highlight each folder, and then check the name of the
Data on the right hand side.

    12. If you see multiple folders with OneDrive as the Data, right click on it, and then select Delete.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For
added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

OneDrive keeps deleting its own Explorer Namespace entry on startup

    Good day, CAE.

Thanks for reaching out to our Microsoft Community Forum.

We understand that you're experiencing an issue with OneDrive deleting its own registry entries when the app or computer restarts. This effectively removes the OneDrive desktop icon and ability to open OneDrive folder via OneDrive tray icon.

This issue could be caused by a number of factors, including a corrupted OneDrive installation, conflicting software, or a problem with your user account. To resolve this issue please try the following steps:

    1. Uninstall and reinstall OneDrive: This will ensure that you have the latest version of OneDrive installed and that any corrupted files are replaced. Refer to link below.

Turn off, disable, or uninstall OneDrive - Microsoft Support

    2. Check for conflicting software: Some antivirus or security software can interfere with OneDrive. Try disabling any security software temporarily to see if this resolves the issue and apply clean boot procedure as described in the link below.

    3. Check your user account: Make sure that your user account has the necessary permissions to access the registry keys and OneDrive files. And as a test, create a new Windows user profile using the link below; log out of your current profile; log in to the new profile; and check if still experience the same issue with OneDrive. I've included a photo of the steps you need to follow from the link provided.
