  1. OneDrive overwrote most of my files.

I have an ASUS Aspire E 15 with Windows 10 that I use for college, work, and travel. I've been using OneDrive as a cloud storage for most of my college class-related files, since it was required by one of my early professors, and I've been doing it that way ever since.

I opened up my laptop on Dec. 14 and I was greeted with the screen that shows up after minor Windows 10 updates. After going through that and skipping signing up for all the features like I usually do, I noticed my entire desktop had green checkmarks, which I knew meant they were cloud synced. Either the update changed something or I failed to skip something I usually skip. I went to my OneDrive and saw that all my files were copied into a new OneDrive desktop folder. I do not trust my important files in the hands of cloud storage, so I made sure my desktop files were still on my actual PC before deleting the desktop file from OneDrive (in hindsight, an extremely stupid move.) Nothing really happened, so I went and did other stuff, and forgot about it completely.

I opened up my laptop earlier today, and went to my desktop to check a file, but everything was completely gone. I tried to access the desktop file within the C:\Users\Username file, but it said it was unavailable. I googled the error message and most articles said to restart, so I did. This caused some shortcuts came back, but no files. I then checked my documents file, and it had been overwritten with what was in my OneDrive. So a large portion of my files (physics sims, CS repositories, game files, personal files, etc.) have been completely wiped and replaced with what amounts to essays and quizzes. Either my laptop's file system has basically been replaced by OneDrive, or it's being synced to whatever's in OneDrive.

I tried restoring previous versions of the files, but there were no previous versions to restore. I checked the OneDrive recycle bin on the OneDrive website, but there was nothing there other than things I had previously deleted from my desktop.

Is there any way to bring back what has been deleted/overwritten, and how can I disable OneDrive syncing so that this doesn't happen in the future?

  2. Windows 10 - OneDrive

Right click on the app and one of the properties has an option to not automatically start it. Uncheck, restart the computer, and it should stop. If you want to go another step further, find the OneDrive app in the start menu, right click on it and uninstall.

If that is still insufficient, there is a batch uninstaller for OneDrive available online. I can copy the code here if you need it.

    Onedrive overwrites newer files

Somehow after a while onedrive started working on my surface and laptop and it overwrote newer files including several excel spreadsheets. I was under the impression that files would not be overwrote if newer files existed.
