Windows 10: OneDrive says my files are stored locally but they're not!

I wish I'd never heard of OneDrive! It's completely messed up my brand-new system I'd just got setup. I can't fully express my feelings without breaking community guidelines.I mistakenly synced my Windows folders, confusing it with backing up, and now I can't stop it. What's worse is that although OD Home claims the folders are stored locally, they're not: Properties shows 0 bytes on disk.They are present online but I have no confidence that unlinking my pc, as is advised, will leave my now wholly online files out of reach forever.I just want my files back on my hard drive in my User Folder,

OneDrive says 235 GB in cloud but no files stored

Check your OneDrive Settings Tab, if Let me use OneDrive to fetch any of my files on this PC is checked (I think it defaults to this) is probably why you're seeing all of your C: drive folders.

My mapped OneDrive just reflects my C: drive usage.

I installed Office 365 and mapped OneDrive to a local drive. When I looked in the new mapped drive in File Explorer, all of the folders in the c: drive were listed under it. I did not take a screenshot and hoped that it was a temporary glitch.
When I look now, neither the local OneDrive nor the mapped OneDrive drive contain files, just the default folders. The folders that I thought I saw under the mapped drive no longer appear.

So, I am surprised to see that File Explorer shows an image of the mapped drive partially full. When I right click on the mapped OneDrive, the properties page says that it contains 235 GB. (I thought that it said 233 before, but I might be wrong about that.)

When I log in directly online and select "what's taking up space," there are just the default folders (including Public) but all of them are empty.
What could be going on?

 

Recent shortcuts for apps show files on OneDrive instead of local hard drive

I was able to follow the steps and uncheck the "Use Office apps to sync" box but it didn't change Office's behavior. I opened and closed an Excel spreadsheet on my local hard drive. After that, when I right-clicked on the Excel icon pinned to the taskbar, a link to the OneDrive cloud file was in the list of recent files instead of a link to the file on my hard drive.

Do you have any other suggestions?
